The Joyce Presents Three Companies In MERCE CUNNINGHAM CELEBRATION

The Joyce Theater Foundation (Linda Shelton, Executive Director), with support from the Merce Cunningham Trust, presents The Merce Cunningham Celebration, an evening of performances paying tribute to the iconic choreographer Merce Cunningham, April 17-21 at The Joyce Theater, as part of the Merce Cunningham Centennial. Three companies - Compagnie CNDC-Angers/Robert Swinston, Ballet West, and The Washington Ballet - each honor the Cunningham's legacy with a selection from his vast repertoire.

Celebrating the life and work of one of the great modern dance artists, The Joyce Theater brings together three brilliant, national and international companies. Each will present a masterwork from Cunningham's rich and expansive catalogue of work. Compagnie CNDC-Angers/Robert Swinston performs Suites for Five, with its quiet, unmoving center; Ballet West presents the classic Summerspace, evoking sweeping landscapes filled with motion; and The Washington Ballet returns with six couples in the sophisticated and intricate Duets-all performed with live music.

The singular Joyce Theater program for its Merce Cunningham Celebration takes place during the week that Cunningham-born April 16, 2019-would have celebrated his 100th birthday. Having begun in the fall of 2018, and continuing throughout this year, the Merce Cunningham Centennial unites artists, companies, and cultural and educational institutions around the world in a multifaceted display and celebration of the dance legend's vital impact.
