SUEÑOS: OUR AMERICAN MUSICAL to Receive Dance Workshop at PCPA & Cal Poly SLO
Jesse J. Sanchez and Marissa Herrera will serve as artists-in-residence at Cal Poly SLO
Jesse J. Sanchez (book, music and lyrics) and Marissa Herrera (choreographer) will serve as artists-in-residence at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where they will workshop and develop the movement vocabulary for the new musical, Sueños: Our American Musical, in partnership with PCPA.
During their residency, Sanchez and Herrera will collaborate with actors from PCPA and Cal Poly SLO, culminating in an informal presentation at the end of the week featuring newly developed movement and select songs from the piece. Emily Trask (PCPA Associate Artistic Director), Marilet Martinez (PCPA Director of Youth and Performing Arts), and Ramón Esquivel (Cal Poly SLO Assistant Professor of Theatre, Playwriting) are leading the development week.
Sueños: Our American Musical has been developed and presented at several prestigious programs, including the Johnny Mercer Writers Grove at Goodspeed Musicals, New York Theatre Barn's Core Programs, Musical Theatre West's New Works Festival, The Orchard Project, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's BLACK SWAN Lab. The musical also received a successful workshop production at Las Positas College last year and has been supported by grants from the National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT). Sueños was recently named a Kleban Prize Finalist for the shows libretto.
In addition, the show has released a concept EP produced by Broadway producer Jim Kierstead, alongside Nicole LaFountaine and New York Theatre Barn featuring Broadway actors.
