Queens Theatre in the Park (QTP) presents THE NEWS IN REVUE on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 8pm in the Cabaret Room at Queens Theatre in the Park, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Flushing, NY. Tickets are $25 and are available at www.queenstheatre.org or by phone at 718-760-0064.
From summer homes in the Berkshires, Coconut Grove, Florida and tours around the country, THE NEWS IN REVUE will be presented at Queens Theatre in the Park. THE NEWS IN REVUE features a troupe of singing satirists who perform topical parody and delight in musically skewering public events and figures from A-Rod to Zadari.THE NEWS IN REVUE began as Nancy Holson's dream in a 1991 workshop in Norwalk, Connecticut. With Steve Sasloe as Musical Director, she recruited a local cast and mounted the first production of THE NEWS IN REVUE. The response was so enthusiastic that Phyllis, Mel and Nancy Holson decided to form ADF Productions, Inc. and take the show to New York. It ran Off Broadway for 120 performances during the 1992 election season. Since then, the group has had resident troupes in Westport and Greenwich, CT and seasonal troupes residing in cities such as Sarasota, FL and Vail, CO. In recent years, the troupe wintered in Florida at both the Coconut Grove Playhouse and the Hollywood Playhouse. In the summer of 1994, the group began their string of summer runs in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts, where they have become a staple in the area's rich cultural arts scene. In 2006, a collection of songs from THE NEWS IN REVUE were the basis of a scathingly funny Off Broadway show called BUSH WARS. In addition to performing public shows, the group has performed at numerous corporate and political functions throughout the country, including shows for various dignitaries such as President Gerald Ford, Cabinet members, Senators, Congressmen, Mayors, and the Speakers of the House from all 50 states. THE NEWS IN REVUE has also been performed for groups as diverse as Wall Street investment companies and the Bankruptcy Bar Association, U.S Tobacco and the American Lung Association. The group has performed eight television specials which have aired nationally on PBS stations. From this, the shows were nominated for 15 Emmy awards and have received five statuettes (three for acting, one for writing, and one for overall entertainment program).QTP became an independent nonprofit in 1997. It is a member of the Cultural Institutions Group receiving support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. The Theatre presents and produces 300 performances annually. QTP serves 100,000 people annually who reflect the rich demographics of its community population. Currently 75% of the Theatre's constituency is from Queens. In addition to its own season, QTP frequently provides its space for use by community arts organizations and local promoters.
QTP has recently completed a $ 23 million physical transformation of the Theatre. This major capital investment has added a 75-seat cabaret performance space with a full service cafe and kitchen facility; created a dramatic new 3,000 square foot lobby/reception area; provided new visitor amenities and improved the facility's accessibility. These improvements have transformed Queens Theatre in the Park into a destination for the residents of the borough and beyond.
Queens Theatre in the Park events are made possible with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. For more information, visit www.queenstheatre.org.Videos
