American Apparel Rehires Old Creative Director

By: Oct. 22, 2014

Sometimes the familiar is the best way to go.

WWD reported that American Apparel has rehired Iris Alonzo as senior creative director to protect and evolve the brand as well as restore some normalcy.

Alonzo was fired in June after founder Dov Charney was ousted as chief executive officer. Scott Brubaker was then named interim CEO in September.

A close source to the company told WWD, "Charney has had no impact one way or the other on any personnel decisions being made. [Interim ceo] Scott Brubaker is the one ultimately making those decisions, not Dov."

Although technically true, many see Charney's influence in Alonzo's return. Charney has returned to the company as well as a consultant but does not hold any supervisory role.

"Dov is fighting hard to regain the ceo job," said the source. "Dov is being very difficult in terms of accepting anything less than the ceo position."

American Apparel has landed in a sticky situation. If they can't negotiate a way for Charney to stay, they could face a huge severance pay or legal battle.
