BWW Review: Off-Putting Narrative in a Pretty Box with Book-It's A TALE FOR THE TIME BEING
by Amelia Reynolds - Sep 26, 2016

Dear Readers, Can you imagine reading your diary from when you were 16-years-old out loud, in front of an audience? Now, can you imagine doing it not for laughs, but to recreate those precious, documented moments with emotional integrity? Superimposing emotion over words such as 'My mom just does not understand me,' in a way that feels both authentic and serious is close to impossible, even when the content of the writing is much graver. This was Book-It's noble challenge in its latest production of 'A Tale for the Time Being' as 16-year-old Nao recites the words of her found diary. (more...)

The Buntyn Family Shares CORNBREAD IN BUTTERMILK
by BWW News Desk - Sep 26, 2016

Cornbread, soaked in buttermilk is an old-fashioned, southern delicacy. For Billy (pen name) Buntyn and his siblings, it symbolizes the love and sacrifice of their late-grandmother, who raised them, single-handedly, to have faith in God, get an education and maintain family values. (more...)

BWW Review: The Gamm's Ambitious but Inconsistent ARCADIA
by Andria Tieman - Sep 26, 2016

Arcadia is considered by many to be one of the best plays in the English language and it manages to walk the line between humor and tragedy very well all while maintaining delightful and rapid reversals of fortune punctuated by moments of real insight. It's interesting to watch a play that is at its core about research and learning, but still come away entertained rather than feeling lectured to.  The Gamm has done admirably taking on this potentially daunting work, and though there are a few hiccups and missteps, the overall production is well executed and thought-provoking. 4th Wall Theatre Company has hit the ground running this season with its opening production of Sam Shepard's Tony-nominated play, TRUE WEST. The piece explores a dualism of personalities, sibling rivalry, art as commerce, and what defines a man. Sometimes funny, sad, and frightening, the play never ceases to stir emotions from the audience. The story is interesting, timeless, and was well-told by Kim Tobin-Lehl. Of all the fantastic shows coming this season, this is one you don't want to miss. (more...)

Photo Flash: Obsidian Opens Daring Comedy 'MOTHERF*#KER WITH THE HAT' on 9/15!
by BWW News Desk - Sep 14, 2016

There has never been a funnier tragedy than The Mofo with the Hat. Some may call this a dark comedy, but the humor here is so wonderfully and naturally integrated that the laughs come freely. At its core, this play is, surprisingly, a love story. It revolves around people thrown apart by lies and abuse issues, who just happen to have the most furiously colorful use of language. It's as heart-wrenching as it is side-Splitting. (more...)

Montreal's Local Indie Scene Invites 8 Companies for their 16-17 Season!
by BWW News Desk - Sep 13, 2016

This 2016-2017 season, eight professional theatre companies at the core of the local indie scene, satisfy a vast range of tastes and interests with stories that stimulate imagination, understanding, discussion and change. English-speaking audiences can become acquainted with French playwrights or young students can take their first step in a life-long appreciation of theatre. Homegrown plays, lauded nationally and abroad, are presented by some companies while others play cultural ambassadors and tour their offerings inside and outside the province. Fact-based productions bring Canadian history to vivid life or delve into stories of other countries and cultures. Theatre-goers will experience characters' challenges and triumphs, embark on spiritual, emotional and historical journeys, see life through the eyes of the disenfranchised and the persecuted, or explore issues of sexuality, freedom, and power. An alphabetical list, by company, follows. (more...)

BWW Review: Forever Entertaining FANTISTICKS Receives a Sterling Production at Pasadena Playhouse
by Don Grigware - Sep 13, 2016

The longest running musical in the world The Fantasticks is always at its best when produced and performed with simplicity. When I first saw it in New York in the 60s, it was performed in a cabaret space against a brick wall, with the suspension of a paper moon above. You can't get much simpler than that. In the current revival at the Pasadena Playhouse, the setting is bigger: a dilapidated, war-torn theatre in Southern California, shuttered since 1969, into which the actors enter to create art. The space may be bigger than the original, but the fine work on display maintains simplicity, especially in its message of love. This is a stunning production, one of the very best I have seen, with a magnificent interracial cast under the seamless direction of Seema Sueko. (more...)
