BWW Blog: Tara Folio - Giulia Dunes's Balancing Act
by Guest Blogger: Tara Folio - Jul 8, 2016

At the beginning of the summer, I thought that moving from Atlanta to New Hampshire was a huge feat, but my "journey" is chump change compared to the distance Giulia Dunes has traveled in order to be at Interlakes this summer. Giulia Dunes is a native of Holland, who is quickly learning how to become a native New Yorker. This summer she is taking on the huge task of Assistant Directing a show that she is performing in, while simultaneously rehearsing for her lead role in the next show of the season. Did you follow that? Me neither. Let me break it down. Giulia is performing as "Missy" in 9 to 5 while rehearsing for her role as "Ulla" in The Producers. The constant character switch is enough to give anyone an identity crisis, and on top of that, English is not Giulia's first language. I had to sit down and talk to her to find out how she handles all of this insanity and chaos with such grace.  (more...)

'Science Mike' McHargue Pens New Book, FINDING GOD IN THE WAVES
by BWW News Desk - Jul 20, 2016

McHargue's story starts at age 25, when he was a deacon in the largest denomination of the Conservative Evangelic movement: the Southern Baptist Convention. Comfortable in his faith, with a beautiful wife and kids, he felt like he had all of the answers about his God, the world, and what's right. McHargue's life came to a startling halt when his dad called a family meeting to announce the end of his parents' marriage. And when McHargue turned to the Bible for help, he came up short (to say the least) on answers. (more...)

BWW Review: The Con is On with DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS at Musical Theatre West
by Michael L. Quintos - Jul 20, 2016

The con is on! With plenty of wit, charm, and double entendres galore, Musical Theatre West's new regional production of the 2004 Broadway musical comedy 'DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS' is one enjoyably silly romp. The show which features a book by Jeffrey Lane and music and lyrics by David Yazbeck continues its final weekend at the Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts in Long Beach through July 24. Based on the 1998 film comedy starring Steve Martin and Michael Caine, the stage adaptation eventually garnered 11 Tony nominations during its run. For MTW's fun new local revival, the title roles---a couple of con men who've taken to swindling the riches off of easily-seduced women in the French Riviera---are embodied by stage vets Davis Gaines (now a multiple fixture at MTW) and the incredibly funny Benjamin Schrader (The Book of Mormon). BWW Review: K ARTS BALLET Sets A New Standard for Excellence
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jul 13, 2016

The maxim 'Go big or go home' holds. That's one thing that can be said for Korea National University of Art's 'K Arts; Rising Stars of Korea Gala': they dance big; Bolshoi big. The leg extensions were never below 9 o'clock and more often than not floated past 12 o'clock; the pirouettes were never fewer than two and frequently zoomed from three to six; the grand jetes soared with clean Splits every single time; and the manner always roared 'I LOVE TO DANCE AND I LOVE YOU TOO'! BWW Review: LEND ME A TENOR THE MUSICAL Runs Riotous at Fountain Hills Theater
by Herbert Paine - Jul 11, 2016

Fountain Hills Theater has wrapped up its 29th Season with a summertime delight ~ LEND ME A TENOR, THE MUSICAL ~ proving definitively that cool community theater is the best antidote for Arizona's triple digit heat. The musical adaptation by Peter Sham (book and lyrics) and Brad Carroll (music) of Ken Ludwig's 1989 Tony-nominated comedy is a madcap affair of love and empowerment that, under the clever and crafty direction of Peter J. Hill and with an exceptionally engaging cast, left me laughing and inspired. (more...)
