The Pacific Symphony Presents BEETHOVEN, BRAHMS AND SCHUBERT, 5/10The Pacific Symphony Presents BEETHOVEN, BRAHMS AND SCHUBERT, 5/10
by BWW News Desk - Apr 28, 2015

After journeying through the early and middle periods of the great composers, Pacific Symphony's Café Ludwig series concludes the 2014-15 season by exploring chamber music from the late periods of “Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert.” With full lives of experience and writing music behind them, composers at the end of their careers conveyed expressive emotions in the most concise and beautiful ways. Pianist and host Orli Shaham shares the genius and distinctive qualities of the music as she performs with Symphony musicians Raymond Kobler on violin, Timothy Landauer on cello and David Chang on clarinet. The concert features Beethoven's Cello Sonata No. 5, well-known for its technical demands, Brahms' poetic Four Pieces for Piano interwoven with Brett Dean's “Hommage à Brahms,” Schubert's rhythmically exuberant Nocturne for Piano, Violin and Cello and Brahms' Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano. BWW Reviews: PETER PAN Takes Flight in a Magical New Production at Children's Theatre CompanyBWW Reviews: PETER PAN Takes Flight in a Magical New Production at Children's Theatre Company
by Jill Schafer - Apr 27, 2015

?Being a grown-up is hard. You have to be concerned about things like bills, a job, a house, traffic, the deterioration of the environment, and violence and injustice in our backyards and around the world. It's really a drag - no wonder Peter Pan doesn't want to be one! And while we boring and worried grown-ups don't have the option of returning to a blissful childhood, we can go to the Children's Theatre Company and forget about all of our grown-up worries, remembering and reveling in the joy and freedom of youth. What better choice for CTC, then, than the musical adaptation of J.M. Barrie's iconic tale about the boy who won't grow up? Kids love it because they see themselves in Peter, and we grown-ups see an even deeper meaning in the story as we watch the children around us grow up in an increasingly dangerous world, and long for our own days of innocence. It's a perfect choice perfectly executed by the entire cast and creative and technical teams. This PETER PAN is something quite magical, and quite simply the best thing I've seen at CTC. (more...)

BWW Reviews: South Coast Rep Stages World Premiere of Rajiv Joseph's MR. WOLFBWW Reviews: South Coast Rep Stages World Premiere of Rajiv Joseph's MR. WOLF
by Michael L. Quintos - Apr 27, 2015

South Coast Repertory's latest offering, MR. WOLF---now on stage in Costa Mesa through May 3---is a high-quality presentation of an intriguingly audacious if not quite fully-gestated new world premiere play from Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph, the playwright behind the celebrated BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO. In Mr. Joseph's enticing new drama, the play employs a ripped-from-the-headlines plot that feels more like a stand-alone episode of any given TV procedural drama, which, unfortunately, by their very nature leaves very little room for real character development, yet provides enough juicy (and at times soapy) melodrama to pique an interested audience. Award-Winning Picture Book Helps Children to Ease Their Bedtime FearsAward-Winning Picture Book Helps Children to Ease Their Bedtime Fears
by BWW News Desk - Apr 25, 2015

No matter our age, we all struggle when faced with fears and Author Alicia Lloyd has written a picture book for children of all ages, and accompanied by soft and atmospheric illustrations portraying thrills and chills that capture the imagination of children in the dark hours of night. 'When the Monsters are Quiet' (published by Halo Publishing, Int. - http://www.halopublishing.com), is a fun way children can start to become proficient readers by reading about one of their biggest worries- bedtime. This book is a reminder never to be afraid of your monsters and has helpful hints for parents to help their children by exploring with early reading strategies at home. This fun book is told from the perspective of a young boy, who hears noises that trigger the scariest images of monsters wondering around his house late at night, until he discovers they are the sounds of his mother getting ready for bed. 'All children at one point in their lives hear unfamiliar and scary noises while trying to drift off into sleep. As Soon as they get scared, they start thinking of all these scary things that can happen,' says Alicia. 'The main message is just to remember that noises can just be familiar noises, like in this case, your mom going to bed. Being afraid of monsters is common, however; I am hoping my book sends the message to never be afraid of their monsters, no matter what their monsters may be in life.' Alicia Lloyd's picture book 'When the Monsters are Quiet' is the winner of the 2015 Keystone to Reading Elementary Book Award. The purpose of the award is to stimulate an interest in reading in students from Preschool to Grade 6 and expose them to quality literature. Each year the committee prepares three lists, one for preschool students, one for primary students in grades K-3, and one for intermediate students in grades 4-6. Teachers promise to read to or have their students read at least four books from the appropriate lists. In March the students vote for their favorite and the winner is honored at the Book and Author Luncheon at the annual KSRA conference in October 2015. 'I feel extremely honored and thankful for winning this award,' says Alicia. 'I was shocked at first and just happy to be nominated, but winning wasn't something I expected and I'm ecstatic that so many kids liked my book. The greatest gift is hearing the experience some children have had with my book. I love hearing how they take it to school with them and read my book to their class. My favorite part is hearing how they aren't afraid of bedtime anymore.' Besides helping children deal with bedtime fears and build self-confidence, Alicia Lloyd's picture book helps build upon 1st grade reading levels with phonemic awareness and reading comprehension strategies within the context of the story and in the back of the book parents will find helpful tips so their kids can become star readers. 'My hope is Alicia's book becomes better known through this award so it can help parents and kids work together to become better readers and writers,' says Halo Publisher Lisa M. Umina. You can purchase 'When the Monsters are Quiet' through Amazon, B&N and Halo Publishing, Int. website. The book is available for Kindle and Nook, and available in 40,000 databases in over 100 countries. Biography: Alicia Lloyd is a student at West Chester University of Pennsylvania and is working towards her Bachelor's Degree in Early Grades Preparation (PK-4) and Special Education. She has a strong passion for working with children and loves to write! She is also a member of the International Literacy Association. In October 2015, Alicia Lloyd will be out speaking at local libraries in the Oxford, PA area, reading to young children and will be sharing monster tips on her Facebook page. She invites anyone to contact her through her email: neverbeafraidofurmonsters@yahoo.com or her book's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/whenthemonstersarequiet. Author's Novel Focuses on the Evacuation of SaigonAuthor's Novel Focuses on the Evacuation of Saigon
by BWW News Desk - Apr 25, 2015

Almost 40 years ago, the world watched as the fate of Saigon sealed the fate of Vietnam. The hotly contested politics of those years, the tragic moments of those last days and the heroic evacuation of not only Americans but tens of thousands of Vietnamese plays a vital role in the newest book in author Spencer Hawke's Ari Cohen espionage series. 'I remember the events of the Vietnam War playing out for the world on our televisions with the international news,' the British-born author said. 'I was young, but the images were striking, and when I began to craft the backstory on my latest villain, those images came back to me. 'As a result, I spent a good deal of time on research of those vital days - April 28-30, 1975 - looking at things from the benefit of nearly 40 years hindsight, and as the anniversary draws near, I feel compelled to be part of the education process that doesn't forget the incredible events that transpired.' By April 28, General V?n Ti?n D?ng and his North Vietnamese forces had begun their push toward the heart of Saigon in South Vietnam and America's military had already largely been withdrawn from the country for some time. With the enemy on its way, evacuation of all Americans in the city had been ongoing for weeks. On April 29, 1975, D?ng began his final attack on Saigon, and General Nguy?n V?n Toàn's South Vietnamese forces weren't the only casualties of the heavy artillery bombardment. That day saw the last two deaths of American servicemen in Vietnam - Charles McMahon and Darwin Judge, killed at Tân S?n Nh?t Airport. By late afternoon on April 30, the North Vietnamese had taken over the Presidential Palace, and renamed the city after the Democratic Republic's President H? Chí Minh. The Fall of Saigon marked the end of the Vietnam War and the start of a transition period leading to the formal reunification of Vietnam into a socialist republic, governed by the Communist Party of Vietnam. But in those precious last days before the South Vietnamese surrendered, Operation Frequent Wind evacuated not only the remaining Americans, but tens of thousands of Vietnamese as well. It was the largest helicopter evacuation in history. 'It's really with the onset of Operation Frequent Wind that my characters' story begins,' Hawke said. 'I tried looking at those hours with an understanding viewpoint for the Marines who had little or no options to help the throngs of people rushing the American Embassy gates, but at the same time, there is another focus that often goes overlooked. 'The controversy surrounding whether or not the American military should have been in Vietnam often overshadows the amazing things we did in those last hours to help save tens of thousands of Vietnamese people,' he said. 'I try to show some of that affinity for the Vietnamese in my novel and I am excited to see the upcoming Last Days of Vietnam documentary coming out that will really tell that amazing story.' Hawke's newest novel, "The Orthus Conspiracy," is Book 2 in the Ari Cohen Series, which features a former Mossad agent now working for a 200-year-old secret society created by America's founding fathers. Orthus isn't his first novel with a tie to historical fact. 'I am a huge history buff,' he said of the hobby that influences so much of his writing. 'My first novel was a Biblical times thriller, and the first book in this series was tied to the 1990's crash of a stealth bomber in Bosnia.' Soon, Hawke plans to release a short prequel to the Cohen works, set in 1700s England and America, of course. "It's a headache for my editor to double-check all my times, dates, names and places," he said of his writing passion, 'but I'm lucky that she loves it as much as me!' (more...)
