Meshell Ndegeocello on Tour, Headed to Commodore Barry Park, 8/23
by BWW News Desk - Jul 27, 2014

Mercurial and masterful, Meshell Ndegeocello has survived the best and worst of what a career in music has to offer. She has eschewed genre for originality, celebrity for longevity, and musicals trends for musical truths. She has lived through the boom and bust of the industry and emerged just as she entered - unequivocally herself. Fans have come to expect the unexpected from Meshell, and faithfully followed her on sojourns into soul, spoken word, R&B, jazz, hip-hop, rock, all bound by a lyrical, spiritual search for love, justice, respect, resolution, and happiness. White Bear Theatre Presents MUSWELL HILL by Torben Betts , August 12-31
by BWW News Desk - Jul 27, 2014

January 2010 - an earthquake in Haiti leaves a hundred thousand people dead and almost two million homeless. Meanwhile in a leafy north London suburb, six individuals sit down to avocado and prawns - 'so reassuringly 1970s' - followed by a monkfish stew. They admire their host's beautifully appointed kitchen, fret about their 'ambitious' mortgages, make holiday plans, compare mobile phone tariffs, connect with Facebook friends, and worry that they might after all just be ordinary - will history remember any of them, and if so, what for? A social event in which much is said but little communicated rapidly disintegrates as the wine flows and some hard truths are told. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Marvelous Production of HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING by Stages St. Louis
by Chris Gibson - Jul 27, 2014

The corporate business world of today is far removed from the tropes that abound in the musical HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING, and that's one of things that makes it so interesting and enjoyable to watch, particularly when it's a production as sharply staged and exuberantly performed as the current presentation by Stages St. Louis. This is the type of musical that this company really excels at, and the overall enthusiasm and energy expended on the stage of the Robert G. Reim Auditorium makes this show an absolute must-see! BWW Reviews: The Rock Turns into a Grecian Superhero in HERCULES
by Matt Tamanini - Jul 27, 2014

Hercules, as the story goes, is the half-mortal son of Zeus, King of the Gods… or is he? The new “Hercules” movie out this week, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the most famous of Greek God offspring, asks the audience to question everything that they know about this millennia-old myth. The film's script asks us to wonder if Hercules is truly a demi-god or just a mercenary with good PR. But the film's look and feel presents us with a less philosophical version of the same question, is he more Superman or Batman? (more...)

BWW Reviews: DORIS AND ME a Smash at the El Portal
by Don Grigware - Jul 25, 2014

Actor/singer Scott Dreier is, by self-description, consumed with Doris Day. He has been a fan since a tender age, watching every Doris Day movie and listening to every Day album hundreds, perhaps thousands of times. We all love Day. Who doesn't? She symbolizes all that is sweet and good in life! Because of her genuine spirit, it became OK for actresses like Mary Tyler Moore and Valerie Harper to have their own shows, representing ordinary yet intelligent young middle-class women and their problems. Because of her, four legged creatures have more organizations looking out for their total welfare. Because of her, our overall lives are a whole lot happier. Scott Dreier, like Day, is genuine, warm with a strong lilting vocal instrument and possessing an infectious charisma, with that famous 'sparkling smile' that will not quit on or off stage. He is the perfect entertainer to extol Doris Day and to sing her unforgettable music. (more...)

There is something very special, even magical, in the wind in Lawrenceville this summer. As he did with last year's LES MISERABLES, director Justin Anderson has found exciting ways to bring new life to a beloved show that we know so well.
