by Matt Tamanini - Sep 30, 2016

Last year, Orlando's Mad Cow Theatre opened a powerful production of Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning play CLYBOURNE PARK, and while their version still holds up a year later, the environment in which we find ourselves in 2016 adds an extra level of resonance to Theatre UCF's production, running through October 2nd. This top-notch production is both beautifully staged and designed, and the cast provides nuanced performances of a script that constantly reveals new layers to be analyzed. BWW Blog: Leanne Marie Laurino - Union High School Senior Wins Perry Award
by Guest Blogger: Leanne Marie Laurino - Sep 29, 2016

On September 18, 2016, I was afforded the opportunity to attend the NJACT's 43rd Annual Perry Awards. I was extremely honored to be present supporting my twin brother, Joseph Laurino Jr. who was nominated for his role as Patsy in a production of Spamalot with the Chatham Community Players. His appearance in the show was an unexpected surprise that resulted in a comic and memorable performance. Our high school director and choreographer, James Mosser and Jennifer Williams branched out to this community theatre project and somehow knew that Joseph would be the perfect fit. This 16 year old boy took on the role of Patsy, the loyal companion to King Arthur, exuding charisma and a sense of maturity that captured the audience. With a stellar triple - threat performance, he left critics speechless with a smile from ear to ear.  (more...)

KENTUCKY AND THE GREAT WAR Honors the 100th Anniversary of the U.S. Entry into WWI
by BWW News Desk - Sep 28, 2016

Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the United States' entry into World War I. Since our entry on April 6, 1917, many books have been written detailing the war and exploring its effects on the world and nation at large, but no comprehensive history of the war's effects on Kentucky existed. At the outbreak of the war, most citizens had relatively little government interaction in their daily lives. In addition, Kentuckians' unique way of identifying by county did little to promote unity. However, unlike the Civil War, which pitted brother against brother, Kentuckians of all ages, races, both sexes, and every political, economic, and social status were expected to “do their part.” The Kentucky that emerged from the war was markedly different than the state that entered it. BWW Review: Disney's NEWSIES Charming Family Fare
by Frank Benge - Sep 28, 2016

NEWSIES is a Disney Theatrical Productions musical based on their 1992 film Newsies. The original film took its inspiration from the Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City. NEWSIES has a book by Harvey Fierstein with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman. It premiered at the Paper Mill Playhouse in 2011 and made its Broadway debut in 2012, where it played for 1004 performances. The stage version contains songs from the movie and several new numbers. Those who grew up on the film version will notice that this new adaptation has written out Jack's original love interest Sarah Jacobs as well as the New York Sun reporter Brian Denton, who writes about the Newsies. These characters have been replaced by a new character, Katherine Plumber, a reporter who is a composite of the characters from the original film. The North American tour, which is currently playing at the Bass Concert Hall, started in October 2014 and is ending its 43 week run on October 2, 2016 here in Austin, TX. (more...)
