New Children's Book RYAN THE PIRATE is ReleasedNew Children's Book RYAN THE PIRATE is Released
by BWW News Desk - Feb 12, 2016

Climb aboard the mighty pirate ship Bella for a swashbuckling adventure with Ryan, the fearsome pirate captain. He and his crew of misfits seek buried treasure, but danger awaits those who sail the high seas. Follow their story in this new book by author Joseph Louis Garces III, released by Dog Ear Publishing. In their latest collaboration, Garces and illustrator Bethaney Abercrombie create a story that stars Ryan, who looks every bit the pirate with his peg leg, patch covering one eye, a bushy beard and a hook in place of his right hand. He and his crew - who all have checkered pasts - sail to an island in hope of finding the treasure marked on their map. Once there, they spend days looking for it to no avail. Fate steps in when a drenching rainstorm pops up, and what could have been disaster quickly turns to joy as they make a surprising discovery. 'Ryan the Pirate' is the third in a series of adventure books dedicated to the author's three sons. Its rhyming words move the story along quickly, and the colorful illustrations with their bold brushstrokes bring the adventure to life. This is the third book for author Joseph Louis Garces III, who also wrote 'Garrett the Firefighter' and 'Tyler the Cowpoke.' Garces, a firefighter and arson investigator for the Oxnard Fire Department, previously served as an elementary school teacher. He is a graduate of Southern Utah University. He and his wife, Taira, live in Santa Paula with their three boys. Illustrations were created by Bethaney Abercrombie, who taught junior high school art for years after earning a degree in art education from Brigham young University and a master's degree in art education from Northern Arizona University. She is now a foster mom. She and her husband and five children live in Gilbert, Ariz. Zimmerli Art Museum to Display 'Early Adopters: The Social Media Prototypes of Daumier and Warhol'Zimmerli Art Museum to Display 'Early Adopters: The Social Media Prototypes of Daumier and Warhol'
by BWW News Desk - Feb 11, 2016

Artists have always examined the intricacies of human nature – whether in their work or through the reactions of the viewer. Two new exhibitions at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers demonstrate how artists working nearly 150 years apart applied their understanding of the public's fallibility to create iconic images. Honoré Daumier and the Art of La Caricature and More than Fifteen Minutes of Fame: Warhol's Prints and Photographs, both drawn from the museum's extensive print collection and on view through July 31, demonstrate how these artists took advantage of the new technologies of their eras to disseminate their work to a broad public, influencing the views and tastes of their contemporaries. Daumier and Warhol also established legacies that remain relevant in today's visual political commentary and pop culture, particularly as seen in the endless supply of – and demand for – ideas and images in today's social media. by Joseph Baker - Feb 10, 2016

A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER must have been a 'labor of love' for Robert L. Freedman, who wrote the book: After all, it is derived from the brilliant 1949 British comedy classic KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS, which benefited immeasurably by performances by Dennis Price, Joan Greenwood, and -- most especially -- the brilliant Alec Guinness, whose impersonation of all the victims was a tour de force. Yet, A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE, with wickedly droll music and lyrics by Steven Lutvak, is a deliciously poisonous bon bon all its own. It's as if Joseph Kesselring's ARSENIC AND OLD LACE had somehow melded with Oscar Wilde's THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, and somewhere 'up there' (or 'down there,' whatever the case may be) writers like Roald Dahl and directors like Alfred Hitchcock must be smiling at the production currently delighting audiences at the Orpheum.
