Sunday in the Park with George has won several awards, including Best Musical at the New York Drama Critics Circle Awards. It also received the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Drama, which was awarded to Stephen Sondheim. James Lapine, the writer of the book, won the Outstanding Book of a Musical award at the Drama Desk Awards. The show also received recognition for its costume design, with Patricia Zipprodt and Ann Hould-Ward both winning Outstanding Costume Design awards at the Drama Desk Awards. James Lapine, who also directed the musical, won the Outstanding Director of a Musical award at the Drama Desk Awards. The show's costume design was further recognized at The Hewes Awards, with Ann Hould-Ward and Patricia Zipprodt both winning in this category. The lighting design by Richard Nelson and scenic design by Bran Ferren and Tony Straiges also received accolades at The Hewes Awards.
