BWW Feature: Broadway Knows how to Celebrate Birthdays; 10 Birthday Showtunes!BWW Feature: Broadway Knows how to Celebrate Birthdays; 10 Birthday Showtunes!
by Matt Tamanini - Jun 29, 2015

My birthday this year took on extra significance, as the Supreme Court of the United States selected that day to rule that all people had an equal and unalienable right to marry whomever they wanted, regardless of gender. While normally a day to indulge in extreme selfishness, I am quite pleased to cede the importance of June 26th from a celebration of my birth to that of love and compassion for all people. Hopefully Derek Jeter, Ariana Grande, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, and Chris O'Donnell are all on board as well. Despite long considering myself a LGBTQ ally, I am now going to turn this feature back to being about my birthday (because I already had the songs chosen before SCOTUS ruled). So, this month, I am taking over sole duties that I normally share with Jeff Walker, and composing a list of 10 showtunes all about births and birthdays. Feel free to chime in on Twitter (@BWWMatt) or in the comments below with any others you would like to add to the list. (more...)

When it comes to either their signature pop-classical mashups - or their politics for that matter - Well-Strung, The Singing String Quartet, wears its heart on its sleeve. For the first single from their upcoming new album titled 'POPssical', due out in early October, the group debuts their new music video 'Chelsea's Mom' today on YouTube. The video is Well-Strung's inventive take on the Fountains of Wayne hit 'Stacy's Mom', reimagined as a tribute to 2016 Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. The musical arrangement for strings is by Well-Strung with lyrics by Well-Strung, Jeffery Roberson & Jacques Lamarre. The video was filmed by Blake Drummond, edited by Randy Rainbow and was produced by Mark Cortale, Matt Farber and Well-Strung. (more...)

The Broadway Community worships at the altar of Michael McElroy and, pretty soon, so will the world. The Broadway veteran, with many shows under his belt, founded the Broadway Inspirational Voices in 1994 and, last night, photographer and friend Walter McBride and I were invited to a private home, where an awe-inspiring event transpired. We witnessed the birth of PARLOR NIGHT, something that ladies Di Ana Pisarri and Schele Williams had dreamed of for some time. (more...)

by John Hoglund - May 5, 2015

After a 20-year absence from Manhattan cabaret, Roslyn Kind resurfaced last year with a sold out run at 54 Below. The show was a hit and audiences so adored her, she probably could have extended a month. At the time, she was fresh off a world tour that that began at Brooklyn's Barclays Center and famously included her nephew Jason Gould, acclaimed jazz trumpeter Chris Botti, and half sister Barbra Streisand with whom she sang some duets. The Brooklyn native returned to 54 Below for the first three days in May and again her show was a hit under the masterful direction of Broadway's Richard Jay-Alexander (more...)
