Though the Met’s season doesn’t technically start till the end of the month, the company started off with a pair of what French chefs might call “amuses bouches”—sort of tastebud teasers. The first was Mahler’s Second, which was done in the open air; the second was its first inside the hall:The Verdi Requiem, which was broadcast (and which I saw) live last Saturday on PBS.

The Metropolitan Opera will present a pre-season performance of Verdi’s Requiem to commemorate the 20th anniversary of September 11. On Saturday, September 11, 2021, at 7:45pm ET, Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin will conduct the Met Orchestra and Chorus with a quartet of star soloists.

The George London Foundation for Singers will present two events at New York's Morgan Library and Museum in the 2021-22 season: the finals of the 50th annual George London Foundation Competition for American and Canadian opera singers, postponed from early 2021, and a recital by the exciting young tenor and 2017 George London Award winner Aaron Blake, with pianist Ken Noda, marking the resumption of the foundation's annual recital series.

In the video, Gallup/Na'nízhoozhí, Anthony Roth Costanzo and Davone Tines sing music by Matthew Aucoin written to poetry by Jake Skeets. Lowe and Skeets are both Navajo artists. Skeets, who grew up in Gallup, gives his hometown a leading role in his poetry. Lowe's film is an unflinching yet tender portrait of the city in 2021.

The 138th season of the Hungarian State Opera will presents seventeen premieres including seven that had to be postponed. The three venues of the Opera await audiences with 400 opera and ballet performances, and a further 1300 concerts, chamber concerts, special events, and multimedia activities mean the beginning of a new era.
