Producers The Shubert Organization and The Nederlander Organization announced today that chart-topping British pop star Leona Lewis will play the role of 'Grizabella,' the Glamour Cat, in the first-ever Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's record-breaking musical, CATS. One of the biggest hits in theatrical history, CATS will return to Broadway this summer at the Neil Simon Theatre (250 W 52nd Street) with preview performances beginning Thursday, July 14, 2016, and an official opening set for Sunday, July 31, 2016. The Atlanta Fringe Festival is proud to return to Little Five Points for the fifth consecutive year, once again bringing hundreds of local and national performers together for a four-day celebration of live performances from all over the theatrical spectrum. This year's productions run a wild gamut, from family-friendly magic shows to puppetry, modern dance, aerial acrobatics, improv comedy and everything in between, featuring fourteen companies from the Atlanta area. Abingdon Theatre Company, in association with The Muse Project, will present STET, a new play inspired by true events, written by Kim Davies and developed by Kim Davies, Jocelyn Kuritsky and Artistic Director Tony Speciale. A limited Off-Broadway engagement will begin previews on June 11, as part of Abingdon's 2015-2016 Season, with an official press opening scheduled for June 23. Tickets are now on sale through July 3. Following a national search, the Los Angeles Master Chorale (LAMC) has appointed Hong Kong native Jenny Wong assistant conductor for a two-year period beginning in May 2016. Wong, who has served as a conducting fellow for the Oregon Bach Festival, the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Distinguished Concerts International New York and Hong Kong SingFest, is one of the youngest conductors to win two consecutive World Champion titles at the World Choir Games (China, 2010) and the International Johannes Brahms Choral Competition (Germany, 2011). Currently a D.M.A. candidate in choral conducting at USC Thornton School of Music, where she also completed her M.M. and has taught choral conducting, she has served as Visiting Director of Choral Activities at University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music for the past year. At a time when social media has contributed to making bullying a major American societal problem, Lisa Jason wants tell her poignant story through the music of the 1970s that she loved throughout her childhood. Her delightful voice and self-deprecating humor makes BULLIED TO BEAUTIFUL a cabaret show that audiences not only will identify with, but that will also send a powerful message that bullying needs to be stopped. The Alliance Theatre has announced its a final extension of the smash hit, ETHEL, written by and starring accomplished Atlanta performer Terry Burrell. ETHEL is a glimpse into the magnificent and very complicated life of the legendary stage and film star ETHEL Waters. ETHEL will close the Alliance's Hertz Stage season at the Alliance Theatre. The show was scheduled to close on April 17, and had already extended once to April 24. This is a final extension and the show MUST CLOSE on May 1, 2016. (more...)
