What did our critic think of SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER at Royale Theatre At Planet Royale?

The Perth Comedy Festival is in town, and there is absolutely no better way to see what this week has to offer than to see the PERTH COMEDY FESTIVAL GALA, a chance to see some of the leading comedians in compacted shows before their big shows throughout the week. There is one gala show each week, and there is no better way to get a sneak peak at the biggest and best the festival has to offer.

Incredibly rich in detail --from staging to technical aspects-- and emboldened with Puccini’s soaring music and meticulous, intelligent direction by Francesca Zambello, Washington National Opera’s production of Turandot is a production for the ages. The entire creative team, the cast, the Washington National Opera Orchestra, the Washington National Opera Chorus, the Washington National Opera Children’s chorus and the Washington National Opera Corps Dancers have given us a Turandot that respects the glorious bones of this beloved Italian opera while adding a new ending that gives the opera a more mature and modern appeal.

It’s safe to say that Olga Koch covers a lot of territory in her show PRAWN COCKTAIL. Her stories go from Japan to the UK to New Zealand, all whilst the audience learns more about parasocial relationships, one night stands, Olga herself, and the namesake prawn cocktails than they probably thought they would.

Jamie New is sixteen and lives on a council estate in Sheffield. Jamie doesn’t quite fit in. Jamie is terrified about the future. Jamie is going to be a sensation. Supported by his brilliant loving mum and surrounded by his friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and steps out of the darkness, into the spotlight.

Tamsin Greig is a marvel as Hester Collyer in Lindsay Posner's new revival of Terence Rattigan's 1950s classic, The Deep Blue Sea, at Theatre Royal Bath's intimate, 126-seater Ustinov Studio.

an enchanted evening that will be remembered for many decades as an occasion that was memorable in every way

When I first heard Kevin Puts’s gorgeous, melodic score for THE HOURS back in 2022, I was blown away, thinking it was almost too good to be true. Could it be a classic? I wanted to hear it again, though not too soon, to give it a chance to settle in its own skin. Lucky us—lucky me—that the Met brought it back so quickly. It reminded me that first impressions are sometimes on the mark.

Nocturne Theatre’s production of Beauty and the Beast hits all the right notes. Fans of the original story will be delighted with the stellar performances of their favorite songs, while fans of Meyer2Meyer’s macabre touch will relish the costumes and the overall ambiance of the Nocturne Theatre itself

There were so many beautiful songs and arrangements, that you’ll simply have to acquire the album or stream it (on Spotify and Apple Music) for yourself to hear the magic that is Linda Kahn!

What did our critic think of SING DOWN THE MOON: APPALACHIAN WONDER TALES at Adventure Theatre & ATMTC Academy?

This bittersweet adventurous and magical excursion into the rehabilitation of broken and discarded objects will have you immediately enthralled from the opening sounds of children teasing and taunting right through to the end.

Chelsea Table + Stage continued its 'Box Set' of shows by Klea Blackhurs. With the May installment, she finds joy and pow with Jerry Herman's show tunes. Jerry Herman's lively life-affirming songs are a perfect fit for Blackhurst.

Pioneer Theatre Company’s Utah premiere of NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812 is deliciously, opulently staged and performed. It is unlikely that the rarely staged musical will ever be seen in the state again in such glorious trappings. Anyone with even a hint of interest should race to PTC to avoid missing out on what patrons will surely be discussing in hushed, reverent tones for seasons to come.

DOUBT: A PARABLE at Gamm Theatre. Shanley's tight, twisty meditation on truth and belief gets a fine production

Levi Holloway’s dystopian play TURRET introduces audiences to an intimate bunker in a post-apocalyptic world. And notably, the play marks Michael Shannon’s return to A Red Orchid. Shannon plays Green, who presides over this mysterious bunker in which he’s holding captive his trainee, Rabbit (Travis A. Knight). At the play's opening, this particular iteration of Rabbit appears to be one of many test subjects within Green’s clutches. The first several scenes of TURRET have a kind of mundanity: Rabbit runs furiously on a treadmill while Green performs a series of tests. The text doesn’t reveal much about the nature of these experiments, and audiences are left to wonder what, exactly, is happening for much of the play. 

Nicolas Dromard & Desireé Davar premiered their cabaret show From Broadway to Hollywood Saturday night at Oscar’s to a packed and very receptive house. The concept of the show is literally their journey from Broadway to Hollywood, covering how they met, how he proposed, some terrific and appropriate songs along the way and a lot of tap dancing (more on that later).
