Review: BRIXTON CALLING, Southwark Playhouse Borough by Kat Mokrynski
- July 28, 2025 When a business venture begins with “a single British pound pushed across the desk” and leads to iconic musicians like Bruce Springsteen performing at the venue, one knows they’re in for a good story. Brixton Calling is a play, written by Alex Urwin and directed by Bronagh Lagan, that tells the story of how Simon Parkes (Max Runham) fell in love with the decrepit Astoria Variety Cinema and made it his goal to transform it into a music venue where everyone could feel free to let loose and be themselves - not a seat in sight.

Review: BBC PROMS: MENDELSSOHN'S VIOLIN CONCERTO, Royal Albert Hall by Franco Milazzo
- July 25, 2025 From the moment the first note rang out, this was no ordinary Proms night. Four wildly different pieces, one restless thread: mischief. EDINBURGH 2025: Old God Q&A by Natalie O'Donoghue
- July 25, 2025 Old God is a foppish, irreverent oracle. A singer of doom. A weaver of myth. A being so old they have forgotten their own name. With beautiful costuming, painted canvas backdrop and fancy golden foot lights, this white face clown seems to have walked out of the theater houses of the 1800s. Pantomime is performed along side improvisational feats of language. No one can keep up as Old God buries the audience beneath a sea of imagery and play spinning wildly in topic but elegantly in body.

For this Late Night Prom, Ensemble intercontemporain (under conductor Pierre Bleuse) brought together three pieces to engage the two composers in posthumous conversation in the lofty surroundings of the Royal Albert Hall.
