Welcome to the Jungle: a camp of stateless citizens outside Calais, France, the temporary home for thousands of people searching for refuge, forced to build a new society from nothing, at the crossroads of cultures and countries. Residents from Syria, Afghanistan, Sudan, and a host of other countries share their stories of loss, fear, community, and hope as they dream of crossing the English Channel to begin a new life. Framed with “poignancy and power” (The New York Times Critic’s Pick), THE JUNGLE is an extraordinary panorama of people suffering and dreaming, surviving and living, coming together in a time of crisis. Woolly Mammoth Theatre teams up with Shakespeare Theatre Company to bring this immersive theatrical experience to DC, in which “theatre shakes hands with the world” (The Sunday Times).
STC’s Macbeth highlights brutal pairs: war and domestic life, grief and humor, brief words and permanent consequences. While the setting could feel unassuming—indeed, audiences must make their way through the parking lot of a Home Depot when arriving via metro—it also shows how extravagant it is to create a theatre space from scratch. This over-the-top, hollowed-out aesthetic fits the world of the play, where titles and status belie a fear of impermanence. Combined with raw, vulnerable performances, this is a powerful take on the timeless tragedy.
Tonight, at a celebration honoring outstanding theatre on stages across the Washington area, theatre artists, administrators, patrons, and special guests gathered at the ATLAS Performing Arts Center for Theatre Washington's announcement of nominees for the 40th Helen Hayes Awards.
Shakespeare Theatre Company has announced the location, cast, and creative team for the highly-anticipated spring production of Macbeth. Directed by STC Artistic Director Simon Godwin, Macbeth stars Tony and BAFTA Award-winner Ralph Fiennes and Olivier Award-winner Indira Varma as the leading lord and lady. The Jungle focuses on the experiences of a community of migrants in a real encampment in Calais and was inspired by the playwrights’ work at the actual camp. From its rich design to its phenomenal ensemble company, The Jungle is a wrenching, one-of-a-kind performance that shouldn’t be missed.
