Classic Stage Company heeft de volledige cast aangekondigd voor The Baker’s Wife, de legendarische Stephen Schwartz–Joseph Stein musical die nog nooit eerder een volledige New Yorkse productie heeft gekregen.
Geregisseerd door Gordon Greenberg, zal de revival de seizoensopening van CSC in 2025–26 zijn in het Lynn F. Angelson Theater (136 East 13th Street), van 23 oktober tot 14 december, met de openingsavond gepland voor 11 november 2025.
Zoals eerder aangekondigd, speelt Tony Award-winnaar Ariana DeBose de rol van Geneviève tegenover Scott Bakula als Aimable Castagnet. Daarnaast zijn er Savannah Lee Birdsong, Arnie Burton, Tony-genomineerde Robert Cuccioli, Alma Cuervo, Tony-genomineerde Kevin Del Aguila, Bill English, Zachary Freier-Harrison, Samantha Gershman, Nathan Lee Graham, Tony-genomineerde Judy Kuhn, Kelly Lester, Sally Murphy, Manu Narayan, Mason Olshavsky, Kevin William Paul, Will Roland, en Hailey Thomas.
BroadwayWorld sprak exclusief met Nathan Lee Graham, die deelde: "Het is spannend om een vroege score van Stephen Schwartz te spelen. Het is spannend om terug in de tijd te gaan en jezelf af te vragen: 'Wat waren zijn invloeden in die tijd?' En voor mij persoonlijk, het spelen van de markies zal zo leuk zijn, ook al steun ik in het algemeen - als regel - geen pooier. Ik ga hem een ondernemer noemen!" Graham vervolgde: "Ik denk dat de schimmige zakenman voor alle toeschouwers duidelijk zal zijn, omdat we in deze tijd met veel, laten we zeggen, schimmigheid te maken hebben. Het zal vreselijk leuk zijn om iemand die een beetje duister is, sympathiek en toegankelijk te maken. Ik sta open voor die uitdaging."
Over wat het voor Graham betekent om deel uit te maken van de eerste volle NYC-productie van de show, deelde hij: "Tuurlijk, er zijn grote thema’s in The Baker’s Wife, maar iedereen en iedereen kan zich erin herkennen. Het is spannend om dit te doen met een stel getalenteerde vrienden."
In een rustig Frans dorpje brengen een bakker en zijn vrouw vers brood… en vers roddel. Wanneer de verleiding opkomt en harten afdwalen, wordt het hele stad in een draaikolk van romantiek, ondeugd en melodie mee gesleept. De productie bevat de verheven muziek van Schwartz—inclusief het geliefde ballade “Meadowlark”—en het boek van Stein gebaseerd op Marcel Pagnol en Jean Giono’s film La Femme du Boulanger.
Het creatieve team omvat Stephanie Klemons (Choreografie), Charlie Alterman (Muzikale leiding), Jason Sherwood (Setontwerp), Catherine Zuber (Kostuumontwerp), Bradley King (Verlichtingsontwerp), en Jason Crystal (Geluidontwerp). De casting is gedaan door The Telsey Office (Craig Burns, CSA).
