Tampa Repertory Theatre (TampaREP) will present a live, virtual production of award-winning playwright Lauren Gunderson's play I and You on Sunday, NOVEMBER 22, 2020 at 3:00 P.M. on the Broadway On Demand platform. Tickets are $10, plus a $3.95 platform fee. The performance can be accessed HERE!

A recording of the performance will be available for on-demand streaming on Broadway On Demand from Sunday, NOVEMBER 22, 2020 at 5:00 P.M. through midnight Wednesday, NOVEMBER 25.

In I and You, a young man, Anthony, arrives at the door of a classmate, Caroline, bearing a beat-up copy of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, an urgent assignment from their English teacher. Homebound due to illness, Caroline hasn't been to school in months, but she is as quick and sardonic as Anthony is athletic, sensitive, and popular. As these two let down their guards and share their secrets, this seemingly mundane poetry project unlocks the much deeper mystery that has brought them together.

One of the most-produced playwrights in the US, Lauren Gunderson has had more than 20 plays produced, including Silent Sky, which was staged by TampaREP in 2016. I and You won the 2014 Harold and Mimi Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award, and was a finalist for the 2014 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.

Helmed by TampaREP Producing Artistic Director and CEO Emilia Sargent (TampaREP's Copenhagen and The Children's Hour), I and You stars Nicholas D. Hoop (Stupid F**cking Bird and A View From the Bridge) and Olivia Sargent (The Children's Hour, Creative Loafing Top Ten Performances of 2015).

TampaREP will produce additional virtual programming throughout the 2020-2021 season, and will announce the next production soon. More information about TampaREP and its mission is available at TampaRep.org.

Arthur Miller’s Masterpiece The Crucible is a 1953 play that is both dramatized and fictionalized around the true events of the Salem Witch Trials between 1692-93. Written as a Political Allegory on McCarthyism, Miller used its dramatizations to detail a time in which the United States Government persecuted people who were accused of being a part of the Communist Party. The Crucible was first performed on January 22, 1953 at the Martin Beck Theatre on Broadway. The original production featured performances from E.G. Marshall, Beatrice Straight, and Madeline Sherwood. Though the play was widely criticized often through hostile remarks, Miller’s play went on to win the Tony Award for Best Play of 1953. A year later, a remounted production was performed and in its wake, the play became a classic. Later esteemed as a central piece in the Canon of American Drama, and regarded as one of Miller’s finest works.

Arthur Miller's subliminal masterpiece in a Three-Act structure All My Sons is what Miller considered his last-ditch effort at writing a commercially successful play. You see Miller's first play The Man Who Had All the Luck failed miserably on Broadway lasting a total of four performances. Miller considered throwing in the towel prior to writing All My Sons.

Sometimes a show comes along that is so powerful, at times shattering, with a top-flight cast, that it deserves two Broadway World reviews. Tampa Rep's production of THE ELEPHANT MAN certainly fits into that category. My BWW colleague, Drew Eberhard, saw the show at its final preview, and I had the honor of attending its opening weekend. At the play's center is a performance by Paul Potenza in the title role that should have anyone reading this sentence to stop what they're doing and obtain their tickets ASAP. THE ELEPHANT MAN runs at the HCC Studio Theater in Ybor City thru February 19th, so you better hurry.

Bernard Pomerance’s The Elephant Man, premiered at the Hampstead Theatre in London in November of 1977. Pomerance’s play also transferred to the National Theatre in London for an “In Rep” residency. From January to March of 1979 it played off-Broadway, and made a transfer to the Booth Theatre on Broadway later in 1979, but the production closed in 1981 after 916 regular performances. The Elephant Man received revivals in 2002 and 2014.

Playwright Lucas Hnath was born and raised in Orlando, Florida. Later his move to New York led him to study Pre-Med, but soon he changed his major to Dramatic Writing, where he studied at Tisch School for the Arts earning a BFA, and subsequently following an MFA. Hnath is the playwright of 10 Dramatic works. His Broadway Debut and most notably his best work A Doll's House Part 2, debuted on Broadway in April of 2017 and closed in September later that year. Commissioned by South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, California, Hnath's contemporary spin/sequel to the Ibsen classic starred Laurie Metcalf, Chris Cooper, Jayne Houdyshell, and Condola Rashad. Metcalf later went on to win a Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her portrayal of Nora Helmer. Subsequently, Hnath's work was also a nominee for Best Play at the time.
