Tosca is a passionate emotional triangle with the feel of a thriller, depicting a single day over three acts. It connects with audiences on a deeply emotional level, presenting an incredibly strong heroine and a truly cruel villain in the lead roles, performed with heart-rendingly beautiful Puccini melodies.
Singer Floria Tosca is in love with the artist Mario Cavaradossi. Mario is arrested by the brutal chief of the secret police Scarpia, who lusts after Tosca and plans to exploit her love for Cavaradossi as a way of bending her to his will. Their destructive power struggle reaches us through some of Puccini’s most beautiful arias, like Tosca’s prayer “Vissi d’arte” and Cavaradossi’s emotional show-stopper “È lucevan le stele”.
American-Italian Director Lorenzo Mariano presents this production in a film-noir style. The events unfold in Italy during the 1930s, a dark and oppressive time dominated by Mussolini’s despotism. This long-awaited revival is one of the season highlights. Conducted by Henrik Schaefer, Musical Director of the Göteborg Opera Orchestra.
