BWW Review: THE THREE PENNY OPERA at Folkoperan, Stockholm
by Annette Stolt - September 12, 2019
Already when you enter the entrance you start to wonder what will happen here. You are greeted by half naked door men who smokes, the fog is tight in the foyer where people begin to gather. Inside the theater lounge there is a bar on the stage where the audience can order something to drink. The ensemble is joining the audience as they take their seats. The audience are supposed to feel like they are part of the show. The Three Penny Opera is a classic story about poor and dirty London with beggars, thieves and a corrupt police chief, and everything is circulating around Mac the Knife (Fredrik Lycke).

September is here and that means a lot of theater opening nights at the theaters in Sweden. Tonight it is the dress rehearsal for Sisters Act (En Värsting Till Syster), based on the movie with Whoopi Goldberg who played the singer Dolores who by coincidence happens to see when her boyfriend Curis shoot one of his gang members. She rushes off to the police station and the deputy turns out to be a guy she knew in school who was in love with her. He promises to protect her if she testifies. He gives her witness protection in a convent, to the dismay of the abbess. But it turns out that the convent needs to be rescued from an acquisition. Of course, it is Dolores who saves the convent by teaching the nuns to sing and it is a huge success for the choir. Although Curtis finds out where she is and comes to the convent to get his revenge.

BWW Review: A MUSIC STORY at Cinemas
by Annette Stolt - June 14, 2019
The film A Music Story is something very rare as it is a Swedish musical film. It is not often a Swedish musical film is made, but this year, three musical films will run att the big screens all over Sweden. First out is Anders Widmarks A Music Story, which premieres on June 14, then comes Peter Joback's 'I come home again for Christmas' in November and at Christmas 'Part of my heart' based on Tomas Ledin's music will run. A magical movie year for any musical lover. Of these three films, I think A Music Story has the lowest budget, which occasionally is noticeable in the film but it doesn't really matter as it's a wonderful tribute to the music and really conveys the love of the music. The strength of this film is mainly in the newly written songs by Anders Widmark and some co-composers. A series of catchy pop songs, rap songs and the amazing Gravity as when I heard Helen Sjoholm sing it the first time in the film gave me shivers. Later in the film it is a duett between Helen and Victoria as well. Helen Sjoholm is one of Swedens most beloved musical artists and has a way of singing which really touches the heart. Most of the songs in the film made me think that this is a really good song, many with a positive and happy melody and feelgood. Songs I will continue to listen to.

The theaters in Sweden are closing one by one for the season and will not open again until mid september. But instead the open air theaters starts to open. Theater lovers will bring their picnic baskets and sometimes even their own chairs. The theaters/concerts arenas are sometimes very spectacular as the Dalhalla https://www.dalhalla.se/evenemang/ arena or very small and local as Sund Nergarden. Both capture the Swedish spirit very well. You can find open air theaters and concert arenas in several places in Sweden. Dalhalla is an old limestone quarry which now is an amazing open air arena in stunning setting and the summer program has artist like Iggy Pop, Peter Joback, The Hives, Pink Floyd and New Order.

BWW Review: MADE IN DAGENHAM at Kulturama
by Annette Stolt - May 09, 2019
Made in Dagenham premiered in London November 9, 2014. Almost 4.5 years later it has it´s opening night Stockholm, Sweden as the adult students at the Musical section at the school Kulturama has chosen it as their spring musical. I think it is fun and very wise to do a musical which has been done before in Sweden as everyone will be able to create their roles without an influence of how it been done before. Although I have seen many musicals in London, I haven't seen this one before. Already at the first tones I thought that this is a musical that I will like as is has happy and positive feeling in the music. The music is written by David Arnold with lyrics by Richard Thomas and the translation into Swedish was made by Johan Schildt.
