As a play text, WOUNDS TO THE FACE is perhaps not as brutal an onslaught on audience reception as some of Howard Barker's other plays, but this production by the University of Cape Town's Drama Department certainly does reveal how challenging the piece is to realise as theatre, especially for young actors who can take away a great deal from engaging with a piece like this.

The top entries for this annual competition will have their plays presented at nightly staged readings, with a professional director and cast, from today, 30 September to 3 October at the Garrick Theatre in the Waterfront Theatre School, with the winners being announced at an awards ceremony on 4 October. Each night will be hosted by a prominent member of the theatre community.

Hennie Smit, the very popular South African actor and singer who is best known for playing the role of Bertie in EGOLI and who was recently playing the role of Deda in the Lefra Productions farce MY BOETIE SE SUSSIE SE OU, was admitted to hospital two weeks ago with double pneumonia, asthma and a fractured rib. Unfortunately, the fractured rib perforated his lung last week, which has resulted in further complications.
