Pretty good production of a pretty good Broadway musical. VICTOR/VICTORIA is fun, but lacks a truly memorable song (or two).

Set in Paris in the 1930s, Victor/Victoria tells the story of talented singer Victoria Grant, down on her luck and out of a job, only to change her identity (and gender!) to become the toast of Paris as 'Count Victor of Poland,' a man who imitates a woman in the local cabaret. Amy Gillette will portray Victor/Victoria, the role made famous by Julie Andrews in the 1980 Blake Edwards movie of the same name. Ron Hastings plays the role of Toddy, played in the movie by Robert Preston. This musical won the IVRT audience poll and is being produced by IVRT for two nights and one matinee only, on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 27 and 28 at the Candlelight Pavilion in Claremont.

VICTOR/VICTORIA's gender-bending exploration of sexual identity and orientation may have seemed fresh, even daring, in 1982, but by the time it hit Broadway in 1995 it was already a bit tame. Today in a 20th anniversary production at Maine's Ogunquit Playhouse, it feels downright quaint when compared to the courage of Caitlyn Jenner and the recent Supreme Court ruling finally making Marriage Equality the law of the land.
It's the 20th anniversary of Broadway's tender and funny, smart and sexy Victor/ Victoria and the Ogunquit Playhouse is celebrating by mounting a full-scale glamorous production of the musical comedy, June 24 to July 18, complete with the original Broadway and touring sets designed by Robin Wagner and costumes by Willa Kim. Check out a first look at highlights below!

In celebration of the SCOTUS ruling to legalize gay marriage, the Ogunquit Playhouse lit up its historic facade in the colors of the rainbow. Equally fitting is the show on stage now, Victor/Victoria, the musical comedy that exemplifies boundless love, gender identity and acceptance.
