Theater Company of Lafayette Presents VICTOR/VICTORIA, Now thru 3/28

By:

Written by acclaimed film director Blake Edwards with music by Henry Mancini, "Victor/Victoria" is a nod to "classic Broadway" while giving a humorous look at the nature of love, gender perceptions and the battle of the sexes.

"Victor/Victoria" tells the story of a down-on-her-luck singer whose life changes when she meets the flamboyant Toddy and becomes "Victor," an overnight singing sensation in the nightclubs of Paris.

However, success becomes hilariously complicated when Victoria meets the love of her life, King Marchan, a macho Chicago gangster. Adding her two cents is Marchan's ex-girlfriend, the ditzy Norma Cassidy, who stirs up plenty of trouble when she's left for a man.

"Victor /Victoria is a timeless love story that speaks to many types of people from all walks of life," says director Artemus Martin. "Within the lightheartedness of the show there is a deep message of acceptance and equality. By pretending to be a man Victoria is able to do many things she never could as a woman."

A down-on-her-luck singer named Victoria is convinced by a struggling gay impresario to disguise herself as a man named Victor, who entertains as a female impersonator known as "Victoria." Becoming a wild success is Paris nightclubs, complications arise when a Chicago mobster sees the act and finds himself attracted to the star.
