If you have witnessed “Fantasticks” as an audience member, enjoy the pleasure of revisiting an old friend. hat did our critic think of THE FANTASTICKS at Music Theater Heritage?

During and prior to the Golden Age of Broadway, songs regularly premiered on stage and then charted, spending time on the radio and becoming popular worldwide. In the 1960s, Broadway songs and popular music diverged, and work from musicals was no longer synonymous with chart hits. There have certainly been a good share of exceptions since that decade, as Broadway has evolved to mirror popular, current music genres. Several of the songs that have broken through to the Billboard charts can be heard on Broadway! 

Music Theater Heritage has announced the cast and creative team for The Fantasticks, starring internationally awarded classical guitarist Nilko Andreas in the role of El Gallo.

A new production of the beloved musical The Fantasticks, reimagined as a contemporary gay love story, is now in development for Broadway under the direction and choreography of Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli.

While the large majority of plays that make it to Broadway were written in English, a small fraction of plays were originally penned in a different language and translated. 

Douglas Ladnier’s deep, rich baritone singing voice left this reviewer, and I am sure many others, wanting more. He hit the Neil Diamond high notes in this 9/19 show.

Heathers is currently playing to sold out crowds at New World Stages, the off-Broadway complex on 50th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues. It’s a New York City return for the teen musical with a relatively short turn-around time since the original off-Broadway premiere of Heathers opened in 2014.

A truly delightful escape, this must-see production is a bit of charmed magic, a fanciful and evocative whimsy.

Opening on July 18, directed by Elina de Santos at Ruskin Group Theatre in Santa Monica, I decided to speak with the production’s leads Luisa and Matt, Sophie Pollono and Rhett Hemingway, about their journey to join the cast, their past experience with the musical, and their feelings about taking the story from the dreamy moonlight into the harsh reality of the Sun.

DIETRICH, written by Willard Manus, starring Cindy Marinangel, Chicago Second City Conservatory graduate, directed by Glenda Morgan Brown and produced by Sea Angel Productions., LLC is based on a true story. Set in May 1960, the play takes place when the actress returned to the Berlin stage for the first time since fleeing the Hitler regime in the 1930’s. Inside her dressing room at the Tatania-Palast Theater, Dietrich weighs whether to go through with the live performance despite threats on her life by Nazi sympathizers who resented her for having spent much of World War II entertaining American soldiers on the front lines. To them, Dietrich is a turncoat; a traitor who deserves to be shot and killed on stage.

 Quintessence Theatre just announced it is adding five more performances of Martin Crimp’s diabolically hilarious and heartbreaking adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac, starring Philadelphia’s J Hernandez in the titular role.

The Fantasticks, the beloved musical that has captured the hearts of audiences for over 50 years, recently graced the stage at the Manatee Performing Arts Center, and what a delightful performance it was! With its timeless story, enchanting music, and talented cast, this production of The Fantasticks was truly an engaging experience.

Village Theatre will present an intimate adaptation of CAMELOT, offering a fresh take on the classic musical.

Aisle Say cannot imagine any veteran of community theatre who does not some relationship with THE FANTASTICKS; who does not look on the show with fondness and a sense of nostalgia. The original 1960 off-Broadway production closed in 2002 with 17,000 performances and revived from 2006 to 2017. There are 250 school and community productions annually. (As of 2010, its original investors had earned 240 times their original investments).

This reviewer left the theater this night with the phenomenal music still humming in my head. The show continues its run on June 7, 8, 10, 11, 12 and 13 at 54 Below with different guests each night, including Marc Shaiman, Alice Ripley, Will Swenson, Seth Rudetsky, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Nova Payton and Kimberly Akimbo’s Olivia Hardy.

Jeanna de Waal, Jay Armstrong Johnson, Kevin Chamberlin, George Abud, Kimberly Immanuel, Adrianna Hicks, Ann Harada, Lara Teeter, Eric Jordan Young, Danny Gardner, Spencer Jones and Joe Capstick will star in the Muny production of Anything Goes.

What happens when a much-loved play or musical is reimagined? If you set Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the 1950s, does that mean it has been reimagined? Could you set My Fair Lady during the Depression and consider that reimagined? The musical Cabaret has lended itself to various interpretations that differ from the original production, even if the script hasn’t been altered at all. And recently, with the permission of Stephen Sondheim, a production of his musical Company changed the lead’s gender from Bobby to Bobbie, allowing a woman to play the role for the first time.

Tom Jones, best known for his work as the librettist and lyricist of The Fantasticks, has passed away. He was 95.
