Review: GOOD NIGHT OSCAR at Asolo Repertory Theatre
by Jacob Ruscoe - Apr 14, 2025
I am on a journey of not only seeing shows that I have never seen before, but also ones that I have never heard of before. This is rare with someone with extensive theatre knowledge but such was the case at the Asolo Repertory Theatre. The stage was set for a touching exploration of one of the 20th century's most fascinating figures: Oscar Levant. 'Good Night, Oscar,' directed by the talented Peter Amster, is a masterful blend of humor, poignancy, and insight into the life of a man who oscillated between brilliance and despair. This compelling one-act play unfolds without an intermission, allowing the audience to immerse themselves fully in the rhythm of Levant's life.

by A.A. Cristi - Oct 1, 2019

With those words, spoken slyly over a cool, hipster jazz groove, JOHN ALLEE draws us into BARDFLY, an otherworldly, super-literate and supremely swinging realm that finds the veteran stage and TV actor, singer-songwriter and all-around creative hyphenate fusing his dual lifelong passions for all things Shakespeare and jazz.

BWW Review: World Premiere of Fast, Funny, Smart STEWARDESS! at History Theatre
by Karen Bovard - Feb 18, 2019
Briskly written and dynamically staged, this world premiere tells a complicated, true, little known story with wit and economy. From the early days of commercial airlines, stewardesses were hired based on looks, required to pass weekly weight checks, forbidden to wear glasses or marry, and fired automatically when they reached age 32. They were also not allowed to apply for the higher paying bursar jobs. Though it took decades, literally, a stewardess named Mary Pat Laffey got all that to change, persisting with a lawsuit under Equal Employment statutes that derive directly from the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

BWW Review: Entertaining Comedy BREATH OF SPRING Opens New Season at Theatre 40
by Shari Barrett - Jul 25, 2016
Production teams at Theatre 40 expertly present mid-20th Century British comedy better than almost any other theater in town. So it was no surprise to find out the group decided to present the riotous BREATH OF SPRING by Peter Coke to open their 51st season, directed by Bruce Gray and produced by David Hunt Stafford, the dynamic duo production team who have brought so many great shows to their stage. Written in 1958, BREATH OF SPRING has nothing to do with the season. In fact, it is a type of silver mink highly prized among fur aficionados. And while we may have differing opinions about wearing fur, there is no doubt in the mid-20th Century that lovely fur coats, stoles and jackets were often worn not only to keep warm but to show the wearer had "made it" into high society.
