International performer Michael Crawford is probably best known the world over for originating the title character in The Phantom of the Opera in the West End, on Broadway, and an extended engagement in Los Angeles. But his seventy year career goes far beyond that one show. Prior to The Phantom of the Opera Mr. Crawford appeared regularly on the West End in such productions as Barnum, Black Comedy, Flowers for Algernon, and Billy. You might also remember him from his performance of Corneilus Hackl in the movie version of Hello Dolly. He also appeared in EFX at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas as well as having a very successful concert and solo recording career.

The Turn of the Screw is a classic ghost story, but something deeper lurks beneath the surface. We tumble into a world of ambiguity, where the boundaries between supernatural phenomena and inner psychology are blurred.

Deftly directed with keen emotional intensity by Catherine Maunsell, this New Zealand comedy-drama is effectively executed by a very talented cast working superbly together to create shape, light and shadow throughout.

Full disclosure: I usually don’t review opera. I am a Broadway kid at heart, and while I appreciate the form, opera is usually not my cup of tea. That said, I was pleasantly surprised by the Santa Fe Opera’s production of Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, playing now through August 5 at the iconic opera house on the hill in beautiful Santa Fe, NM.
