The Real Thing

The Real Thing is Tom Stoppard's comedy examining the complex nature of love, art and reality.

Henry is a successful and talented playwright married to Charlotte, an actress playing the lead in his current play about adultery. Her co-star and friend Max is married to Annie, also an actor. Henry and Annie have fallen in love but is it any more real than the subjects in Henry's play? As the story unravels, Henry discovers that love - 'the real thing' - can be unpredictable and painful.

The Real Thing premiered in London in 1982 and was produced on Broadway the following year, collecting several Tony Awards. The play was revived at the Donmar Warehouse in 2000 with a cast including Stephen Dillane and Jennifer Ehle, which transferred to the West End and Broadway.

This production of The Real Thing at the Old Vic stars Toby Stephens as Henry. Stephens was most recently seen on stage in A Doll's House at the Donmar Warehouse and previously in The Country Wife, Tartuffe, Betrayal and A Streetcar Named Desire in the West End. As well as numerous productions for the RSC, Stephens has many screen credits including the Bond film Die Another Day and TV dramas Jane Eyre, Cambridge Spies and The Camomile Lawn.

The Real Thing's author Tom Stoppard is one of Britain's most respected playwrights, with numerous awards to his name. He is the author of plays including Jumpers, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, The Coast Of Utopia, Hapgood, Arcadia and, most recently, Rock 'N' Roll. His writing for film includes the BAFTA and Oscar-winning Shakespeare In Love.

It's fitting, then, that MST would produce the Regional Premiere of Stoppard's latest work.

John Calvin Abney is set to return with his self-produced LP Safe Passage on Tulsa's Black Mesa Records next Friday, September 27. Originally announced via Wide Open Country with a premiere of lead single 'Turn Again,' Safe Passage follows 2018's Coyote, which Rolling Stone Country called “dreamy folk with a good balance of sadness and sunshine.” For the new record, Abney tapped an impressive set of musicians for his studio band: fellow Tulsa Americana artist John Moreland, Shonna Tucker (John Paul White, Drive-by Truckers), Will Johnson (Centro-matic, Monsters of Folk), violinist/vocalist Megan Palmer, David Leach (John Fullbright, Jason Eady), and drummer Bryan McGrath. Together they bring to life songs that tend to look for light in the face of tragedy, worry, or self-imposed struggle. Songs such as album opener, 'I Just Want To Feel Good,' which premiered at The Bluegrass Situation this week. Abney offered, 'This song was written in a short 20-minute nova of inspiration. I had a nagging cold while up at altitude, staying in a cabin by myself in Colorado, and dodging my troubles through travel and wine. I grew tired of being a people pleaser in order to dodge conflict (the real superficial kind) and was chasing the shadow of happiness in the wake of the real thing.'

Ray of Light's (ROL's) production of The Rocky Horror Show filled me with hope for the youth of America. Lest that sound a bit strange, allow me to explain. Yes, ROL's a?oeRockya?? delivers in spades on the sexy entertainment value of this transgressive, go-for-broke show. But a?" it is also grounded in layers and layers of queer showbiz history even though it is presented by performers and designers who are way too young to have been around for the real thing. Taking the written-in-the-1970s-but-set-in-the-1950s show as its starting point, this production adds loopy gay cultural references from the 1930s right up to the present day - as if concocted by some crazed drag queen and thrown into a blender to see if it will explode. Surprisingly, it never does and it somehow all works.

'I've had several Japanese people come up to me before and say, 'This is our story.' They were an older married couple, and I thought, 'Oh? This is a New York story, why do you say that?' And they said, 'Because, back in the late 50s early 60s, our villages were feuding, and they wouldn't allow us to marry. So there was this tension, but seeing the movie in 1961 made us say, 'Let's do it!' And we eloped.'
