Revival of MY ROMANTIC HISTORY Will Come to the Tron Theatre
Johnny McKnight directs the Scotsman Fringe First-winning comedy at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow
Tron Theatre Company will present a revival of one of Scotland's most acclaimed romantic comedy plays My Romantic History, by D.C. Jackson. Directed by Johnny McKnight, My Romantic History is a sharp, laugh out loud exploration of modern dating that dives into the chaos of questionable office romances, exes who refuse to stay in the past, and asks the ultimate dilemma: if you haven't met ‘the one' by thirty, is the problem you — or everyone else?
Performances will run Fri 5 - Sat 13 Jun, 7.30pm (matinees Thu 11, 1.30pm and Sat 13 Jun, 2.30pm).
Awarded a Scotsman Fringe First at the 2010 Edinburgh Festival and since produced in multiple productions across the globe, My Romantic History is a fast, witty and universally relatable story about two people who might just be perfect for each other if they can ever get over their past. Tom is single and spectacularly uninterested in romance. That's until he starts his new job and meets Amy. After six pints at an office social and a questionable kebab later, suddenly they find themselves dating. As they're swept into spending nearly every moment together, it becomes clear that the real obstacle isn't chemistry but the emotional baggage they're both still dragging from ghosts of relationships past. What begins as an accidental entanglement quickly becomes a funny, tender exploration of two people trying to work out whether they're falling in love or simply falling into old patterns.
Award-winning writer, director and performer Johnny McKnight has assembled a strong comedic cast that features Lewie Watson as Tom/Calvin (Too Many Penguins? (Frozen Charlotte) and Macbeth (Young Shakespeare Company)), Rebecca Wilkie as Amy/Alison (Shō and the Demons of the Deep (National Theatre of Scotland/Independent Arts Projects) and The Testament of Gideon Mack (Dogstar Theatre)) and Julie Wilson Nimmo as Sasha (Radiant Vermin, Aganeza Scrooge (Tron Theatre) and Balamory, Govan Fair Queen (BBC)).
Director Johnny McKnight says of the piece: ‘Finding the right person to date is a nightmare, the only thing worse than dating is getting over who you've been dating. It's why I think My Romantic History stands the test of time, and ultimately, feels ready for a revival. I have loved this play by D.C. Jackson since I first saw it over ten years ago. It's a testament to the brilliance of the writing that it feels just as hilarious, fresh and brilliantly relatable all these years later. Get ready Glasgow, this truly is one of the greatest stage rom-coms ever written for Scotland!'
As part of Tron Theatre's commitment to connecting with local communities across the city, My Romantic History will also embark on a 8-venue tour in partnership with Glasgow Life from 17-26 June, visiting venues in Knightswood, Netherton, Whiteinch, Castlemilk, Bridgeton, Barlanark, Penilee and a special performance at the Lodging House Mission.
