Four young dancers are forever changed when a legendary ballerina visits their summer program to teach them more than just ballet.

The new drama with dance is set for the three performances in the Broadway Bound Theatre Festival this August and is being directed by Paul Edwards, with choreography by the playwright.

Madeline Davis, a legendary principal ballerina, has agreed to choreograph a ballet for a summer intensive program for young dancers. Her reputation as an eccentric personality, has the girls that were cast in the piece, on edge. But as the choreography process unfolds, the girls learn that rumors about Madeline's life do not even begin to explain the life that she has lead. And while the girls learn from the mistakes of Madeline's past, Madeline herself faces her greatest fear of all... her immortality.

That is the freedom that I spoke about earlier. Never let the body restrict you. Human bodies have the potential to do anything, if we develop them correctly. Even the most inhuman pointe technique can be something extraordinarily modern. The time they spent on pointe, and the motions they created while en pointe were much longer and more challenging than those typically performed in classical ballet.

When the American Ballet Theatre came to Washington, D.C. last year, they served up a delectable Whipped Cream at the Kennedy Center. In 2019, the company has returned with a similarly infectious Harlequinade which, even when viewed independent of Whipped Cream, never reaches the technical heights expected of such a revered company. At Tuesday's performance, the murmurs I overheard at intermission were largely mixed with one audience member calling the dance 'enjoyable but so thin it was like looking through cellophane.' Harlequinade is a fun evening-but it plays more as an introduction to ballet then as a truly triumphant production.
