Show-stopping Sugary Goodness At WEST END BAKE OFF 2017

On a (thankfully) sunny Saturday afternoon, the thespians who usually inhabit London theatres turned bakers for the day. Benefitting Acting For Others, an umbrella name that represents 15 charities devoted to helping people in the theatre business, the West End Bake Off was a bounty of show-stopping sugary goodness. Acclaimed One Woman Show BETTE DAVIS AIN'T FOR SISSIES Opens at the Athenaum Theatre

Jessica Sherr is proud to announce the limited Chicago engagement of her smash hit one-woman show Bette Davis Ain't for Sissies, June 15 - July 2, at the Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport Ave. Created and performed by Sherr, the 5-star reviewed show has performed in Edinburgh, Scotland, had a run at The St. James London, a sold-out off-Broadway run at 59E59 Theaters and toured performing arts centers throughout the United States. Opening night is Thursday, June 15 at 7:30 p.m. Performances are Thursdays - Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. with matinees Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $24 - $34 and available at AthenaeumTheatre.org. 42ND STREET Wins Third Annual West End Bake Off Benefiting Acting for Others

Lyric Opera Announces Casting for Spring Run of FELLOW TRAVELERS

Lyric Unlimited has announced casting for the Chicago premiere of Fellow Travelers. Tenor Jonas Hacker and baritone Joseph Lattanzi will sing the lead roles of Timothy Laughlin and Hawkins Fuller, two men who fall in love during the height of the McCarthy era in 1950s Washington D.C. Maybe the gambling theme initially drew me to Swimming with Bridgeport Girls by Anthony Tambakis (recently published by Simon & Schuster), which Jonathan Tropper called 'a sad, smart, funny-as-hell novel with a broken heart that beats powerfully between the lines of every page....' But I stayed because it's irresistible, the perfect bookend (exacta?) to pair with another recent favorite, Jonathan Lethem's A Gambler's Anatomy.   (more...)

CCO Opens 35th Season with Premieres of Two Getty Operas

The New York premieres and world premiere production of Gordon Getty's "Scare Pair," a double-bill by the San Francisco-based composer, pairs his two one act-operas -- Usher House and The Canterville Ghost -- together for the first time on October 19 and 21 (7:30pm) at The Sylvia and Danny Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College (located at East 68th Street, between Lexington and Park Avenues).  Both works, with the libretto and music by Mr. Getty, will be sung in English and have a running time of 60 minutes each. Theater for the New City's Dream Up Festival presents SWORD OF THE UNICORN

'Sword of the Unicorn' is an original play written and directed by Harrison Stengle. Unlike the vast majority of fantasy and sci-fi stories, which exclude or ignore LGBTQ narratives, it takes on a surrealistic sci-fi interpretation of what it is like for the play's hero, Sebastian, to come out to his father.
