A high-energy, dance-heavy musical set in early 1930's Atlantic City, Steel Pier tells the story of a dancer, Rita Racine, and her quest to finally leave the dance marathon circuit of which she has been trapped for so long. It has a story based loosely on the film They Shoot Horses Don't They? Steel Pier is a tale of love and romance with a touch of bribery and deceit thrown in for good measure.

Playwright Chip Deffaa Remembers Music and Television Star David Cassidy

'Others, who did not know him, can write obituaries about David Cassidy. I want to share some personal remembrances. I knew him, I liked him, I am saddened by his loss. I was glad that David chose me to ghost-write his autobiography, 'C'Mon Get Happy' (by David Cassidy with Chip Deffaa, published by Warner Books). And writing that book with him was an intense experience. He was open, candid, frank, and a fantastic storyteller. He had a seemingly endless supply of self-deprecating stories to tell, which I appreciated. He shared everything with me, with the understanding that we could decide later what to put into the book, and what to keep private. I liked his openness. (more...)

In this episode he discusses how he had to audition for two of his biggest jobs, what true and honest collaboration is, and that in the theatre medium there is no such thing as final cut. He has learned that some of the best ideas came out of desperation, his greatest songs weren't written sitting in front of a piano, and that eventually you have to make a choice. 'I have written many chamber operas, various chamber music with voice, jazz songs, r&b songs, choral music and songs inspired by various genres and cultures. I thought it would be great to have a concert that features my eclectic vocal compositions.
