In short, it demands stunning stagecraft and brilliant artistic vision. And it is just that kind of theatrical magic which Maine State Music Theatre's new production co- directed by Marc Robin and Curt Dale Clark boldly and beautifully realizes.

Sunanda's debut solo show, How Gay am I? is a comedic multimedia exploration of her own queerness. The journey begins with an earnest story detailing her coming out to her conservative Indian parents, and ends with everyone in the audience going home gay. Think that's absurd? Wait till you meet all the other queerdos she could've been! The list of characters includes a traditional Indian girl who is likely a poon-jabbing Punjabi, a delinquent dyke with a TED Talk on a?oeWhy Everyone Should be a Lesbian, Todaya??, and a lieutenant of the a?oeBeef-Policea??. If that's not gay enough for you, be serenaded by some sing-song stand-up, and mesmerized by Mustachio, a genderless cruise ship crooner.

a?oeFor nearly forty years this story has given faithful service to the Young in Heart; and Time has been powerless to put its kindly philosophy out of fashiona??..a?? These words from L. And as the curtain goes up, the audience is treated to arguably the largest, most lavish production in MSMT history with a cast of fifty (that includes twenty children and a dog), dazzling technical elements, staging and choreography to blow one away, and performances to melt the heart. a?oea??When I saw Marc Robin's production at the Fulton in 2016, I said, a?oeWe have to do this at MSMT. Nineteen-year-old multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter JulienChang recently signed to Transgressive Records (SOPHIE, Let's Eat Grandma, Neon Indian), and shared his debut single “Of The Past,” which earned praise from the likes of Annie Mac at BBC Radio 1, The Guardian, Stereogum, Dazed, DIY and more. Today he announces his remarkable debut album, Jules. A Baltimore native and current university student, Chang(pronounced Chong) surprised his peers when he began quietly self-releasing music during his senior year of high school two years ago. 'The record was brought to life by uncertainty and experimentation, just like most everything else in life is during the summer before senior year,” Chang explains. “Even in the last weeks of recording, I was unsure of what kind of album it would turn out to be, but I think that was the point of making it—to follow inspirations indiscriminately and to whatever extent I felt.' The self-produced, self-recorded and almost entirely self-performed debut album shows Chang's fusing infectious pop melodies and experimental psych-rock with progressive jazz improvisation and sophisticated classical construction, all while spanning multiple instruments. Now Jules will get a proper release, out on October 11th- pre-order it HERE.
