Perhaps the most well-known instance of a show changing titles during the development process belongs to the groundbreaking 1943 phenomenon, Oklahoma! The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that changed the art form in terms of subject matter, integration of elements, and more was originally titled Away We Go! when it went out of town for a New Haven tryout. Oklahoma! is far from the only instance where a musical changed its title along the development road.

Two decades after Spring Awakening first premiered on Broadway, BroadwayWorld is taking a look back at what the cast of this era-defining musical, including Lea Michele, Jonathan Groff, and more has been up to.

One would think a musical all about corn would be a one-trick pony with the same tired joke made again and again. Corny jokes about corny people in a corny town. That’s exactly what SHUCKED wants the audience to expect. The very first song, aptly titled “Corn,” extols the virtues of the vegetable, the expected jokes about how it can be used for anything and everything, and how this little town in the middle of nowhere relies so heavily on it that it literally becomes their entire identity. However, hidden within this opening number also lies the subversive nature of the musical itself. This is not just a celebration for all things corn. Rather, it’s a commentary on how small towns in this country suffer from preconceived notions of backwards values, of tradition over innovation, and of hyper-conservative rural voters who nowhere near as bright as a high noon sun on a summer day.

The record-setting, multi-Tony Award winning musical THE BOOK OF MORMON will make its return to Atlanta from June 24 - 29 as the final production in the 2024 - 2025 Regions Bank Broadway in Atlanta season at The Fox Theatre. Among the cast is Jarius Miquel Cliett, who plays Mafala Hatimbi and who has deep roots in Atlanta. I had the chance to catch up with Jarius to discuss his journey in the theatre, his experiences with the show, and his excitement about performing for a hometown crowd.

Arlekin Players Theatre’s production of “Our Class” led the winners at this year’s Lucille Lortel Awards, presented at New York University on May 4, where the play, by Tadeusz Słobodzianek and adapted by Norman Allen, was honored as Best Revival.
