Man to Man tells the story of Ella; a woman forced to adopt the identity of her dead husband in order to survive in Nazi Germany.

Compromising her own identity for survival, Ella is plunged into a new masculine world of beer, schnapps and poker; a claustrophobic existence dominated by the fear of discovery and the changing face of authority in a volatile twentieth century Germany.

Shunted from one memory to another, the audience experiences the full force of this all-consuming one-woman play, confronting the horror of the Second World War from a unique and deeply personal perspective.

BWW Review: SOMETHING ABOUT ALWAYS PULLS ON A LIFETIME OF HEARTSTRINGS at Hayes Theatre
by Brodie Paparella - Jul 3, 2016

It's funny how some of the most iconic moments, the most important figures in one's life can go by unnoticed, until one takes a raw moment of honesty and clarity when those easily emerge. I wonder if Simon Burke felt something like this as he brought a life's worth of story and song before us at the Hayes Theatre, for it's certainly what the audience were feeling. In a show truly genuine and generous, Burke played remarkably in the moment, to present his audience with a journey that warmed the cockles of the Hayes Theatre Cabaret season's heart. (more...)
