Heavy Pettin' first stirred into action when vocalist Hamie, guitarists Gordon Bonnar and Punky Mendoza, drummer Gary Moat and bassist Brian Waugh first burst out of Glasgow in 1981. They were vibrant, priapic, anthemic and focused. As they showed on a three-track demo, and on the subsequent debut single for independent label Neat ('Roll The Dice'__/'Love Xs Love'), they were more than mere Def Leppard slaves. In fact, the Pettin' had an international sound that owed something to AC/DC, UFO, Thin Lizzy and Foreigner, but also had its own raging momentum.

2020 Sundance Film Festival Announces Juries

Sundance Institute will gather 25 celebrated and revered expert voices across film, art, culture and science to award feature-length and short films shown at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival with 31 prizes, announced at a ceremony February 1. Short Film Awards will be announced at a separate ceremony on January 28. The Festival takes place January 23 through February 2 in Park City, Salt Lake City and Sundance, Utah.

I admit this is an absolutely personal, totally one-sided view of what gave one man opera thrills last year and what I will look back on with delight. Some are old works, some are new, some are individual performers, some are ensembles, some are complete productions, some are merely the highlight of an evening, most are domestic, a few are foreign. In any case, as the new decade begins, I recall that these are the vocal highlights that made my heart beat a little faster and made me look forward to the year ahead.

The OMNI Ensemble Begins Its 37th Season

The OMNI Ensemble will begin its 37th season of concerts in the recital hall at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music on Saturday evening, November 16, 2019 at 8:00 pm. Music Director/Flutist David Wechsler, will be joined by violist Amadi Azikiwe and harpist Chelsea Lane for a concert of music for flute, viola, and harp. Works include Debussy's Sonata for flute, viola and harp, Maurice Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin, David Stock's A Vanished World, Arnold Bax's Elegaic Trio and David Wechsler's Three Movements for flute, viola and harp. Continuing as the chamber music group in residence at the Brooklyn Conservatory, the OMNI Ensemble will continue to perform concerts of enormous variety all designed to provide their audience with a musical diversity not ordinarily encountered by one chamber music group. Throughout the season they perform in the recital hall at the College of Staten Island and the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. Lyric Opera Of KC Welcomes Carol Vaness For a Free Master Class

Lyric Opera of Kansas City today announced a rare opportunity to see a master at work when world-renowned soprano Carol Vaness teaches a Master Class with the Lyric Opera Resident and Apprentice Artists on Sat., Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. in Lyric Opera's Michael and Ginger Frost Production Arts Building (712 E. 18th St., Kansas City, MO 64108). Currently a vocal instructor at Indiana University and Aspen Music Festival, Vaness will lead each singer through a selected aria, stopping and correcting as needed, to help hone the singer's vocal technique and dramatic interpretation. A brief reception will follow the vocal work session.

One of the nation's most adventurous opera companies, Odyssey Opera, begins its seventh season with a concert performance of Henry VIII (1883) by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns based on El cisma en Inglaterra (The schism in England) by Pedro Calderón de la Barca. This kick-starts the company's 2019-20 season featuring concert and staged operas about the great English dynasty of the 16th century: the Tudors. With libretto by Léonce Détroyat and Armand Silvestre, Henry VIII brings to life one of history's most infamous love triangles featuring baritone Michael Chioldi as King Henry, soprano Ellie Dehn as Henry's first wife, Catherine of Aragon, and mezzo-soprano Hilary Ginther as Henry's second wife, Anne Boleyn.
