BWW Review: THE FLOOD Gracefully Tells the Tale of Turmoil in the Heartland
by Julie Musbach - Sep 9, 2018

On Saturday, September 8, Prospect Theatre mounted a concert production of Peter Mills and Cara Reichel's new original musical The Flood. In the summer of 1993, the town of Valmeyer, Illinois was devastated when the levees broke and the Mississippi river overtook the town. The Flood fictionalizes this tale, resetting it in the town of Meyerville where a host of characters bring heart to the moving tale. (more...)

BWW Review: Good Fences Make Bad Neighbors in Intiman's NATIVE GARDENS
by Jay Irwin - Sep 8, 2018

For as long as there have been living spaces people have had points of contention with their neighbors, whether it's the people upstairs, next door, or on the other side of the fence. Maybe they're too noisy, or they shoot off Fireworks right outside your bedroom window on the fourth of July, or they like to stack up their garbage by their front door rather than taking it to the dumpster (you guessed it, I once had the neighbors from hell). But no matter the differences the hope is that people can work them out (or just let them seethe inside for years) without resorting to pesticides and chainsaws as the folks in Karen Zacarias' play "Native Gardens" did, currently being offered from Intiman Theatre. Novo Amor Shares Heartwrenching Video For New Single UTICAN
by BWW News Desk - Sep 6, 2018

Novo Amor has unveiled the official video for his new single 'Utican', which premiered earlier today on The FADER. The track is the latest to be taken from his forthcoming debut album Birthplace, to be released on October 19 via AllPoints. Much like the video for the album's title track - which seeks to address the monolithic problem of plastic in our oceans - and was awarded Independent Video of the Year at the AIM Awards earlier this week - the storyline for the 'Utican' video also centers on a topical and emotional issue, befitting of the cinematic nature of Novo Amor's music.  (more...)

BWW Review: 1812 TCHAIKOVSKY SPECTACULAR WITH THE SAN DIEGO SYMPHONY at At The Bayside Amphitheater
by Ron Bierman - Sep 4, 2018

The cannons boomed, bells rang, and spectacular multicolored Fireworks exploded overhead as the SDSU Aztec marching band, including eight tubas, joined the San Diego Symphony to celebrate Russia's victory over Napoleon! Tchaikovsky would have been delighted, though probably secretly so since he said he loathed the piece. He also might have been a bit puzzled about a performance more than a century after his death 6,000 miles away from Moscow. I doubt he envisioned the overture as a mainstay of summer pop-season finales with cool summer breezes wafting in from a bay on the Pacific Ocean. but unjaded classical-music fans delight in the tradition. BWW Review: Sprightly, Sassy PIRATES OF PENZANCE Closes TAM Season
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - Sep 16, 2018

The Theater at Monmouth resumed its tradition of a fall Gilbert and Sullivan production with a sprightly, sassy, clever new take on the beloved chestnut, Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance. In a significantly trimmed score and re-imagined concept, the work comes alive with a freshness, energy, and new slant to the humor, while retaining the silliness of the script and the appeal of the songs. BWW Review: MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS Trollies The Muny Into Its Next 100
by Tanya Seale - Aug 6, 2018

Meet Me In St. Louis is the picture-perfect nostalgic closer for The Muny's centennial season, a romantic musical based on the 1944 film that follows the Smith family through 1903 and into the new year as they await the opening of the 1904 World's Fair. The plot is a bit old fashioned by modern standards, but focuses on family, friendship, and love, and pays an affectionate tribute to a bygone era in St. Louis history. (more...)

BWW Review: SAVION GLOVER & GREGORY PORTER - SOPHISTICATED RHYTHMS N' JAZZY BLUES NAT KING COLE STYLE at The Hollywood Bowl
by Valerie-Jean Miller - Aug 21, 2018

He's out there on stage, on a raised dance platform at The Hollywood Bowl, center, downstage, in a simple T-shirt and pants, into himself, making sounds like a woodpecker, a train; a horse trotting,... maybe there are Fireworks going off? Maybe gunshots, or a rapid -fire AK-47, even. The sounds are all coming from the bottom of his feet! He is like lightning with tap shoes on. Like bursts of electrical currents that make all kinds of sounds. Snap, crackle, pop, step-step, shuffle, ball-change, flap, flap, then into a tirade of tap accents too fast to count out or give a name to. GREGORY PORTER: NAT KING COLE & ME If you like classy jazz and blues, lovingly remember Nat King Cole and his style, and hearing a beautiful live orchestra playing, Gregory Porter is your man. Vince Mendoza conducts the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra with finesse and aplomb, and Gregory sings one glorious tune after another, starting out with 'Mona Lisa.' It's a sit back, relax and just enjoy it all, rest of the evening. He has a deep, rich voice, sounding very much like the great Nat King Cole and the pipes to sustain those ending notes with ease. BWW Review: MSMT Throws Big, Beautiful 60th Birthday Bash
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - Aug 14, 2018

Anniversaries are times to reflect, to evaluate, but also to celebrate. Yesterday with its 60 Years of Musical Theatre: The Best of Maine State Music Theatre gala concert, the Brunswick theatre pulled out all the stops with a big, beautiful Diamond Jubilee gala that proved a stunning culmination to this milestone season. And indeed, six decades after Victoria Crandall launched her dream at the Pickard Theater on the Bowdoin College campus, MSMT can boast numerous reasons to celebrate its history, as well as its present accomplishments and future aspirations. In a matinee and evening stagings that featured musical performances by twenty-one soloists and an ensemble of ten, as well a number of spoken tributes, Artistic Director Curt Dale Clark architected a program that was classy, heartfelt, and rich and deep in the talent it showcased. As with any commemorative event, the program tapped into nostalgia and memory but blended these with a strong sense of the vigorous, energetic, imposing presence this company has become - not only in Midcoast Maine but also as a force in national regional theatre. BWW Review: THE PRODUCERS at Musical Theater Heritage
by Alan Portner - Aug 12, 2018

Great theater requires a willing suspension of disbelief.  'The Producers' by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan requires a willing embrace of 1940's Catskill schlock and shtick.  That said, MTH's 'The Producers' is so much inspired silliness, so well performed, and so meticulously put together, it is tough to stop giggling and smirking and groaning at the awful, hysterical, politically in-correct, funny, one-liners.   The Saturday night, Crown Center audience for 'The Producers' thoroughly embarrassed itself and was delighted to do so.
