Rose Theatre Kingston Announces 2018 Christmas Show HANSEL & GRETEL

Rose Theatre Kingston today announces its 2018 Christmas show, a festive new version with original music of the Brothers' Grimm classic Hansel & Gretel written by Ciaran McConville, who returns to the theatre following last year's successful adaptation of Alice in Winterland. Rosie Jones will direct a cast of local young actors from Rose Youth Theatre led by a team of professional actors. The production opens on Friday 14 December, with previews from Thursday 6 December, and runs until Sunday 6 January 2019. (more...)

The ASCAP Foundation has announced the inaugural lecture of The ASCAP Foundation Mark Snow Lecture Series, scheduled to take place on Wednesday, April 11 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema at Steiner Studios in Brooklyn, NY. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, provides a unique opportunity for aspiring film and TV composers, songwriters, composition and film students and SCL members to learn from Snow, who will share his knowledge and experience. First Nation Composer Jeremy Dutcher Shares New Album on Billboard, LP Out Tomorrow

Jeremy Dutcher is a Toronto-based performer, composer, and classically trained operatic tenor. He is also a member of indigenous community, Tobique First Nation, and will release his debut album, Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa (Our Maliseet Songs), on April 6th, 2018. Today, he shares the exclusive first listen with Billboard, who says, 'is an 11-song fusion of his ancestors' archival recordings and his own classical and pop influences, intended to disrupt the 'bilingual Anglo-centric Canadian music narrative,' adding, 'The 27-year-old -- who is a member of the Tobique First Nations in northwestern New Brunswick, and studied music in Halifax, Nova Scotia -- doesn't believe this music should be 'collecting Dust on a museum shelf,' so he took five years to painstakingly put this album together, transcribing Wolastoq songs more than a century-old - once banned from being performed in public due to the Canadian government's discriminatory Indian Act from 1876 - to re-introduce them to the world.' Michigan Opera Theatre Announces 2018-19 Opera Season, Celebrates Literary Masterworks

??????? Michigan Opera Theatre CEO and President Wayne S. Brown and Principal Conductor Stephen Lord today announced the company's 2018-19 opera season.  MOT's 48th opera season will be the second under Lord's artistic leadership and celebrates masterworks of literature turned opera, with "Eugene Onegin" (Pyotr Tchaikovsky), "Candide" (Leonard Bernstein) and "The Grapes of Wrath" (Ricky Ian Gordon/Michael Korie). The season also includes a staple of the opera repertoire, "The Barber of Seville" (Gioachino Rossini) and a fairytale opera, "Hansel and Gretel" (Engelbert Humperdinck). The season begins Sept. 29 with a gala concert featuring opera superstar Renee Fleming.   (more...)

The Briscoe Western Art Museum raised a record-breaking $2.4 million during the first weekend of the 2018 Night of Artists Art Sale & Exhibition, including nearly $1.9 million in total art sales. This year's show is the biggest to date with over 280 works of painting, sculpture, and mixed media art on display by 74 of the country's top contemporary Western artists. Although American Idiot is classified as a musical, it would be better classified as a very politically-powerful rock opera. From the head banging to the electric guitars and booming bass, the audience were enrolled as spectators in a rock arena. Although quite disjointed, the piece features music composed by the punk-rock band Green Day, with the score including each song from the album of the same name, as well as additional songs from their album 21st Century. American Idiot follows the story of three alienated childhood friends Johnny (Linden Furnell), Tunny (Connor Crawford) and Will (Alex Jeans) as they navigate their way to find meaning, purpose and colour in a Trumpian suburbia. Whilst Will stays at home to fix his rapport with his pregnant girlfriend Heather (Ashleigh Taylor), Tunny and Johnny flee a stifling suburban lifestyle and parental restrictions; however, as always, things don't always turn out as they seem. Tunny ends up joining the military and although he starts a relationship, it quickly turns to Dust after Johnny turns to drugs, discovering a darker part of himself. (more...)

VIOLET is a 1997 musical with music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by Brian Crawley. It's based on the short story 'The Ugliest Pilgrim' by Doris Betts. The musical first premiered Off-Broadway in 1997 and won the Drama Critics' Circle Award and Lucille Lortel Award as Best Musical, it was later produced on Broadway but considered a revival.
