BWW Review: WICKED at Shea's Buffalo Theatre
by Michael Rabice - May 20, 2017

Good Triumphs Over All in WICKED. It's hard to know if in 1900 L. Frank Baum ever imagined there would be an afterlife to his children's book 'The Wizard of Oz,' but in 1939 MGM capitalized on book's wide appeal and their film version has became a staple in every child's movie experience. Flash forward 64 years to what can best be described as a prequel to Dorothy's famous journey, and you have the megamusical WICKED, which has become almost as popular as the MGM film. (more...)

It won't even be on Michael Ball's new album and he really must be running out of tunes now. It's just not that sort of number. (more...)

BWW First Person: What A Difference A Transfer Can Make; Looking at the Differences in Shows Between London and New York
by Kerry Breen - Aug 13, 2017

Ever wonder how your favorite show looks on the other side of the Atlantic? Sometimes a show is exactly the same - and sometimes, the changes can make it nearly unrecognizable. It's no secret that productions cross the Atlantic all the time - whether they be iconic blockbusters like PHANTOM OF THE OPERA or more recent popular productions such as BEAUTIFUL and KINKY BOOTS. Sometimes, those shows end up almost exactly the same in their new home, with only the most minute changes; others appear to be entirely new pieces. The casts may change; staging may vary. Sometimes certain turns of phrase are edited or altered to make more sense, geographically or in terms of local slang. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Apr 5, 2017

TheatreWorks Silicon Valley continues its 2016/2017 season with a musical saga of immigrant America, Rags. From the creators of Fiddler on the Roof and Wicked, this exhilarating musical follows the journey of Jewish immigrants Rebecca and her son David, who find themselves navigating the teeming, turn-of-the-century tenements of New York. A soaring, tuneful score (music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Stephen Schwartz) illuminates this sweeping saga (book by Joseph Stein) of dreams and disillusions, love lost and inspiration found, and the heart and soul of the American character. It was declared "A winner, warm and witty. You are tempted to rise cheering," by The Mercury News. Rags will be directed by TheatreWorks Founding Artistic Director Robert Kelley, who notes "this production could not be timelier. As America debates immigration policies, what better time to present this deeper look at the newcomer's experience." Performances are April 5-30 (press opening: April 8) at Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro Street, Mountain View. For tickets ($35-$86) and more information the public may visit TheatreWorks.orgor call (650) 463-1960. (more...)

BWW Blog: Sydney Gross - My BroadwayCon Experience
by Guest Blogger: Sydney Gross - Apr 4, 2017

It has been practically two months now and I am still suffering from Post BroadwayCon depression. For those who don't know, BroadwayCon was a convention held at the Javits center in New York City from January 27th to the 29th and I am not exaggerating when I say that it was one of the best weekends of my life. Honestly, I did not know what to expect going into it. It was only the second year that Playbill and Mischief Management teamed up to put this event on and last year's convention was visited by a giant blizzard. I had gone with my two best friends and even though this was our first year going, we went all out with a different cosplay each day. These consisted of The Schuyler Sisters, all three Heathers, and Danny, Sandy, and Rizzo from Grease. As soon as we stepped into the Javits center it was as if we were stepping into another world. A world where it was okay to burst out into showtunes, find a way to quote a musical to any conversation, and meet your favorite Broadway actors as they were just walking around. There were Glindas, newsies, and Hamilton's galore.  (more...)
