Already firmly established in Deep House circles and armed with an impressive roster of artists including John Randle, Javi Xavier and Boot Slap, UK's Proud Runs Deep label's latest release comes from Bristol DJ/producer, Sam Pitch, who returns for the first time since his remix of Danny Kissane's 'Crazy' back in March. A relative new-comer he may be but it's clear Proud Runs Deep think very highly of his abilities when it comes to nailing the perfect sound for clubbers to get down to on a packed and sweaty dance floor. And with good reason.

It couldn't have been better timed. When Gerald Barry started work on his latest project - an operatic take on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - the world was still rotating smoothly on its axis, business as usual. But fast-forward a year to the European premiere and we find ourselves in a topsy-turvy alternative reality, with a celebrity president, a UK soon to be out of Europe, and madness everywhere we turn. Suddenly a trip down a rabbit-hole seems less a fantasy than a mirror for absurdities rather closer to home. But if the absurdity feels familiar, the mood is quite the reverse, because Barry's opera is utterly, bewitchingly joyful - 50 minutes of batter-you-round-the-head-with-a-bunch-of-flowers brilliance.

With so few stars remaining, some of the good ones were bound to end up in the bottom. But an unexpected break for one of the show's less talented stars at the outset made for quite an upset on tonight's results show.

I had the good fortune to go to a great party Wednesday night. Well, it wasn't officially a party. It was, officially, the first of Santana's 31-show 2012 residency at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. (This residency extends into 2013 with those dates to be announced.)

If you do believe in spooks, to paraphrase the character actor Burt Lahr as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz, then you'd probably gather that the spirits of our dear departed greats of Broadway are likely denizens of the theaters where they achieved their greatest successes, perhaps at the Neil Simon Theatre (formerly The Alvin), for example. But if the late, great character actors of 20th century musical theater are haunting any house these days it is most definitely the intimate and quaint theater space at Urban Stages on West 30th Street. This is where veteran actor/singer Jim Brochu has just started his run (until March 30) as a magical musical medium in a nightly one-man-show-as-seance that conjures these performing poltergeists, who are assuredly more Beetlejuice than Jacob Marley.
