A Doll's House

Calcutta. 1879.

Niru, is a young Bengali woman in a mixed-race marriage with an English colonial bureaucrat – Tom.

Tom loves Niru, exoticising her as a frivolous plaything to be admired and kept. But Niru has a long-kept secret. And just as she thinks she is almost free of it, it threatens to bring her life crashing down around her.

Tanika Gupta reimagines Ibsen's classic play of gender politics through the lens of British colonialism, offering a bold, female perspective exploring themes of ownership and race.

It's been 15 years since Norwegian house wife Nora Helmer slammed the door on her husband, three children and the rest of married life in Ibsen's sober 19th-century drama. Now she's back in Hnath's darkly comic Broadway darling.

The simple act of deception that opens Ibsen's A Doll's House never ceases to amaze me. A housewife enters, laden with boxes or bags from a recent shopping trip, and pops a sweetie secretly in her mouth. Her husband calls, playfully asking if she visited the confectioners whilst in town. Of course not, the wife replies, licking her lips. If she can lie about something so simple as a delectable treat, what else is she hiding?

As it did when it originally premiered, the drama holds a mirror up to what is considered acceptable in a society, without judgment or bias. The show's observant nature starkly highlights the place and power of women, a topic which still audibly resonates with audience members today.

Holly can currently be seen in the Round House Theatre production of A Doll's House Part 2. When you leave the theater and you immediately purchase a copy of the play, that should indicate that you have really enjoyed it. This does not happen often but it happened to me as I left the Lansburgh Theatre (temporary home of the Round House during renovations) in DC. A Doll's House is a play studied by students around the world. A production ahead of its time, it questioned the traditional roles of men and women in the 19th-century. This message, while not well received at the time, was essential to the forward movement of theatre. A Doll's House, Part 2, written 140 years later by Lucas Hnath, aims to answer the question of what happened where Henrik Ibsen's classic play left off?
