disPLACE is a contemporary chamber opera composed by Raquel García-Tomás and Joan Magrané with libretto by Helena Tornero, performed in English and Catalan with English subtitles. The work explores gentrification, belonging, and the right to stay through two intertwining stories of loss, resilience, and displacement set amid a city in transformation. Directed by Kelly Kitchens and conducted by Jay Rozendaal, the cast features mezzo-soprano Julia Benzinger and baritone José Rubio, with cellist Grant Olson and violist Kayleigh Miller. Originally produced in Catalonia, this marks the opera's North American premiere, staged at Theatre Off Jackson in Seattle's International District.
