Look out, Jonathan’s back! Tony Award winner Jonathan Groff returns to Broadway as Bobby Darin, the legendary singer whose short but remarkable life took him from teen idol to global sensation.
Developed and directed by Tony Award winner Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge), Just In Time is an exhilarating new musical that immerses audiences in an intimate, swinging nightclub complete with a live band, a stellar ensemble cast, and iconic Bobby Darin hits
In Just In Time, discover the man behind the music – a once-in-a-lifetime talent who knew his time was limited and was determined to make a splash before it was too late.
Bobby Darin (1936–1973) was a multifaceted entertainer whose career spanned singing, songwriting, acting, and producing, leaving an indelible mark on American pop culture. Rising to fame in the late 1950s, Darin showcased his versatility with hits like the jazzy Mack the Knife, which won him a Grammy Award, and the tender ballad Beyond the Sea. Known for his dynamic stage presence and charisma, he seamlessly transitioned between genres, from rock and roll to folk and swing.
Darin also found success in film, earning an Academy Award nomination for Captain Newman, M.D. His legacy is one of relentless artistry and adaptability, as he broke boundaries in entertainment while battling lifelong health challenges. Despite his untimely death at 37, Darin’s influence remains strong, with his music and story continuing to inspire new generations.
By the time of his death, at 37, in 1973, the show’s final descent into lugubrious eulogy — “He finished six years of grammar school in four years and got a scholarship medal besides,” Nina says — has swamped its early buoyancy with platitudes. Yet Groff is still swimming, right to the end. Dismayed as I was to endure so much else, I have to admit he’s giving one of Broadway’s best performances. So who’s sorry now?
Early in the show, as the band vamps on “Beyond The Sea,” Gross, working the audience, says slyly, “I first heard this next song the way we all first heard this next song – twirling in our mother’s heels in Pennsylvania Amish country, listening to our father’s records…I never would’ve guessed I’d have anything in common with him, the playboy crooner and me in Mom’s pumps, but turns out I do. He loved – [gestures back and forth between himself and the audience] – this. It was the only relationship he was any good at. Honestly? Same.”
