Renton Civic Theatre Presents: Steel Magnolias
By Robert Harling
Renton, WA – Join Renton Civic Theatre this April for Steel Magnolias, an unforgettable tale of friendship, love and loss.
The action is set in the 1980s at Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where anyone who’s anyone gets their hair done. Assisted by new hire Annelle (who may or may not be married to someone who may or may not be a dangerous criminal), Truvy dispenses haircuts and humor in equal measure as the local ladies come through one morning before a big event. Controlling mother M’Lynn wants to have the last say when it comes to her rebellious but sweet daughter Shelby, but an upcoming wedding puts them at odds. Town matriarch and newly-widowed Clairee searches for purpose with humor as she navigates the world after her husband dies. And neighborhood grouch Ouiser brings her special perspective on everything, whether it’s appropriate or not.
As the story unfolds and these stories weave together, gossip is shared and secrets are revealed all within the walls of the beauty shop.
Playwright Robert Harling says in his note to the actors, “The women in this play are witty, intelligent, and above all, real characters. They in no way, shape, or form are meant to be portrayed as cartoons or caricatures.”
And so, Steel Magnolias becomes a vivid, engaging portrait of real, strong women.
