The UC San Diego Department of Theatre and Dance has announced the winner of the 2017 Dr. Floyd Gaffney National Playwriting Competition, ain't no dead thing, by a.k. payne. payne will be awarded a $1000 prize, and her play will receive a staged reading on Saturday, June 3 at 2pm, at the Theodore and Adele Shank Theatre in the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theatre District on UC San Diego's campus: 2910 La Jolla Village Drive, La Jolla, CA.

San Diego's innovative new Above Board Theatre Company is excited to announce the World Premiere of Night and Day, a debut production with music and lyrics by Joe Jackson. Based on Jackson's 1983 Grammy-nominated album of the same name, Night and Day will be mounted for the first time at the 2017 San Diego International Fringe Festival. The album was written during the British rocker's extended stay in chaotic early 1980's Manhattan. Night and Day contains nine songs of sharp wit, paranoia, anxiety and brilliant songwriting. After the album's release, The New York times said that it '...captures the flavor and tempo of contemporary Manhattan very evocatively.' Weaving pop, salsa and Afro-Cuban beats, the album spawned two chart-topping hits, the popular 'Steppin' Out' and 'Breaking Us In Two,' well-known anthems of the decade.

The enchanting musical production is based on the opera by the same name by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. The triumphant love story between an Egyptian prince and a slave transcends warring nations and brings a country together. Aida is an epic tale of love, loyalty and betrayal chronicling the love triangle between Aida, a Nubian princess stolen from her country, Amneris, an Egyptian princess, and Radames, the soldier they both love. As their forbidden love blossoms, Aida is forced to weigh her heart against the responsibility she faces as leader of her people. The love Aida and Radames has for one another becomes a shining example of true devotion that ultimately transcends the vast cultural differences between their warring nations, heralding a time of unprecedented peace and prosperity.
