BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL Sings at TRINITY REP
by Larry O'Brien - November 15, 2019
First of all, I am a sucker for Dickens' A CHRISTMAS CAROL. I like the Alistair Sim version that you might find close to the holiday. I like the Bill Murray version, Scrooged, set in the present day in the television industry. I like the Muppets' Christmas Carol. How many of you have seen Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol? I thought so. I really have a warm spot in my heart for the adaptations Trinity Rep has produced over the years. You can still hear occasional snatches of music from the Adrian Hall/ Richard Cummings version in this year's production, but what remains is the bones: the simple, moving story of the reclamation and transformation of a wretched, miserable old man.

Bell Gallery At Brown University Presents LUSCIOUS: Paintings And Drawings By Wendy Edwards
by BWW News Desk - November 13, 2019
The David Winton Bell Gallery at Brown University is presenting the exhibition Luscious: Paintings and Drawings by Wendy Edwards, a 40-year retrospective of the artist's prolific career. A masterful colorist, Edwards creates paintings in which she explores the physicality of pigment on canvas and vibrant works on paper executed with soft pastels. Expressed in exuberant colors and bold compositions, the works vary from landscapes and still-lifes to organic forms and abstraction. The survey includes works created since 1980 when Edwards joined Brown University's Department of Visual Art faculty. The 50 canvases and works on paper convey strong emotional content informed by Edward's relationship with the natural world and abiding commitment to a feminist vision.

Sparkling Ensemble Brings MRS. DALLOWAY to Life at Head Trick Theatre
by Robert Barossi - November 09, 2019
Observing visual art can at times create an experience where the viewer has no idea what they are looking at or what the artist is trying to say but they cannot help to appreciate and enjoy the undeniable beauty of the colors and the composition. A similar reaction occurs with Head Trick Theatre's current production of Mrs. Dallow, a play overflowing with gorgeous performances and staging in service of a script that is at times confounding, infuriating or just dull.

by Erica Cataldi-Roberts - November 01, 2019
Nearly six years after opening on Broadway and 27 years after appearing as a beloved animated Disney film, the national touring cast of the musical ALADDIN soars into the Providence Performing Arts Center. This version of the story contains many callbacks to the original 1992 film, but also adds many new elements, such as new songs, new characters, and even a new spin on the Genie. No matter one's familiarity with the source material, audience goers are in for a flashy and thoroughly entertaining evening, suitable for adults and children alike.

BWW Review: JQA at The Gamm Theatre
by Erica Cataldi-Roberts - October 30, 2019
When it comes to United States history, it can be easy to gloss over the period between the early 1800s to the cusp of the Civil War. The generation who lived during this forgotten era, however, faced no less tumultuous times than we do in modern times. Aaron Posner's play, JQA, specifically looks at this time period through the eyes of John Quincy Adams, who, as the son of founding father John Adams, and later a statesman in his own right, was uniquely poised to survey the era's ups and downs. Through the use of fictionalized encounters with some of America's most dynamic figures, the political and personal issues raised in JQA are as relevant now as they've ever been.

The Beacon Theatre Workshop has put together an amazing rendition of this potent and moving work of theatre to kick off their season, focusing on mental health: Dreams and Nightmares. The players have pulled out all the stops and Director/Designer Jason Robert LeClair has pressed the limits of what the Beacon Theatre Workshop's Blackbox space can do with the help of Woonsocket native and Technical Director, Christopher Cournoyer.
