Wilbury Group to Present AN ILIAD, 1/23-2/8

The Wilbury Theatre Group presents the Rhode Island premiere of Lisa Peterson and Denis O'Hare's highly acclaimed Obie award-winning adaptation of Homer's epic poem, An Iliad. Directed by Clara Weishahn (Sharon in DETROIT at the Wilbury Group) and featuring Rhode Island native Matthew Fraza as 'The Poet', this re-telling brings to life the ancient tale of gods, goddesses, warriors and their families, and the endless battles of human history with a gripping, modern voice. An Iliad runs January 23-February 8 at The Wilbury Theatre Group, 393 Broad Street, Providence RI. Tickets are just $15-$20, with discounts available for subscribers, seniors, and students. 2nd Story Theatre Announces Major Grant Award from The Champlin Foundations

2nd Story Theatre is honored to announce that it has been awarded a $125,000 grant from The Champlin Foundations to assist in the restoration of The Liberty Street School, acquired by the theatre in 2013 for use as a set building workshop and rehearsal studios.

Every holiday season, along with all the usual theatrical suspects, there are always a few unique and surprising choices that pop up on area stages. There's usually some kind of strange or twisted take on A Christmas Carol. There's often some kind of musical revue, or two, featuring favorite holiday tunes. Oftentimes, there's a comedy show, or four, usually sending up much of what happens during the season. This year, one such non-traditional offering can be found at The Wilbury Group, where they are presenting A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant.

Empire Revue to Present New Year's Eve Event at AS220

This New Year's Eve, the Empire Revue is producing a variety of acts at AS220, 115 Empire St. in downtown Providence. The day is split into two parts, featuring family friendly shows starting at 1pm in the black box theater at AS220 and a sketch comedy variety show followed by a dance party with the Superchief Trio starting at 9pm in the main performance space.

Veteran Rhode Island comedian Frank O'Donnell is bringing his third holiday play to the stage. 'A CHRISTMAS CARMELLA' is a spin-off from the two 'ANT'NY CLAUS' plays O'Donnell wrote and co-directed in 2011 and 2012. 'In this one, Ant'ny's mother-in-law - Carmella Senior - is asked to tell her grandkids the classic holiday story, 'A Christmas Carol,' says O'Donnell. 'But, she gave the book away, so she's got to tell it from memory. And that's where the fun starts.'

Trinity Repertory Company's Education Department has announced the third annual Write Here! Write Now! student playwriting competition. Students in grades 9-12 from the six New England states are invited to submit an original short play (6-10 pages) between now and February 3, 2014. The winning playwrights will work with Trinity Rep staff members to further develop the work, and then see their play read by professional actors in front of an invited audience of friends and family.
