Visiting THE PROM in original stage form will be refreshing for those who know only the Netflix version. It's as if someone grabbed a theatrical scouring pad and scrubbed away all the glitzy, feel-good 'Glee'-dom that made Murphy's take feel slightly sugar-rushed. On stage, THE PROM is refreshingly edgier, campier, and just a smidge more foul-mouthed than in the movie, albeit still unrealistic and all too tidy in the end...

The National Tour of the 2019 Drama Desk Award winner for Outstanding Musical THE PROM began performances on November 2 at Playhouse Square in Cleveland. The tour stars Kaden Kearney (they/them) as 'Emma, High School Student, Banned from The Prom,' Kalyn West as 'Alyssa Greene, Head of Student Council with a Secret,' and more.

In 2010 a gay Mississippi high school student was banned from coming to her senior prom by the school’s Board of Education because she wanted to bring her girlfriend as her date.  She challenged the ruling, which resulted in the cancellation of the prom.  The student and the ACLU sued the district.  The federal court found the school district guilty of violating the student’s first amendment rights and said the prom must be held.  

NJ Rep will present its first outdoor short play festival on Saturday, August 28 and Sunday, August 29 at 2pm and 5pm. The performances are free and will be held at their West End Arts Center, 132 West End Avenue, Long Branch. There is free parking in their lot off of Sairs Avenue.

Pleasant Valley Productions in collaboration with the Mac-Haydn Theatre will present a developmental production of David Maglione's newest musical work, The Most Incredible Thing. This project is a commissioned piece for the Children's Theater season at the Mac-Haydn Theatre, located in Chatham, New York.

Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre, professional Theatre in Residence at the Oakes Center in Summit, will present its annual Meet the Artist new play reading series.

The production began performances at TBS Akasaka ACT Theater on March 10.

The Prom's movie soundtrack is largely a well-made version of Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin’s score, although it occasionally seems to prioritize glitz and polish over the scrappy joys of its stage predecessor.

The live film adaptation in my opinion is the thing us musical theatre geeks have been waiting for all of quarantine.

I approached Ryan Murphy’s film adaptation of THE PROM, expertly crafted for the stage by writers Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin and composer Matthew Sklar, with a lot of trepidation. Fortunately, most of my fears were misplaced and the final product is a joyous, technicolor celebration of living authentically that tugs all the right heartstrings while tickling every funny bone.

Centenary Stage Company's 2019/2020 professional theatre series continues with its Annual Family Holiday Spectacular, Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Since the beginning of summer 2019, Broadway has bid farewell to a whopping eleven productions. Some were pre-scheduled. limited runs; others long-running favorites; all equally missed. Before the end of August, six more will take their final bows.
