Review: MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL at Bass Concert Hall

MOULIN ROUGE! The Musical, is an electric jukebox musical based on the 2001 film Moulin Rouge! directed by Baz Luhrmann. The stage adaptation, like the movie, is a visually extravagant love story set in the Montmartre district of Paris at the turn of the 20th century. It opened on Broadway in 2019.

Review: MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL at Van Wezel

Indulge your senses, for to merely label “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” as a mere Broadway success is an egregious understatement of this unparalleled masterpiece. Allow me to regale you with the sumptuous details of its grandeur - during its opulent Broadway premiere in 2019 at the illustrious Al Hirschfeld Theatre, this divine creation was bestowed with 14 Tony nominations and gracefully claimed 10 coveted awards, emerging as the undisputed belle of the ball with accolades such as Best Musical, Choreography, Scenic, and Costume Design.

Review: MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL at Straz Center

Review: MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL Dazzles at PPAC

Moulin Rouge! The Musical, debuted in Boston in 2018, and seems like an incredibly logical adaptation of a wildly successful musical film.  The stage version, showing at PPAC through December 31, hews very closely to the film in terms of plot and the bigger musical numbers, but also adds some new songs and showcases some exceptional sets and lighting that really make this production feel new on the stage.  While jukebox musicals can feel tedious, this is a refreshing re-envisioning that sparkles with well-chosen songs and outstanding vocal performances.

Review: MOULIN ROUGE THE MUSICAL at The Hippodrome

I remember trying to watch Moulin Rouge when the movie came out in 2001 and only getting about halfway through it. I have to confess I found the story rather trite and entirely predictable, only elevated by the inclusion of lots of catchy pop songs. So I was delightfully surprised when I saw the current iteration of this piece as a Broadway musical. Here I was all set to cast my weary, cynical eye on one more story of the ‘ho with a deadly disease (they do seem to be disproportionately prone to tuberculosis), but I was thoroughly entertained by this dazzling, dizzying, diamond of a show.
