The play before Nick Payne hit big with Constellations, fails to ignite

West End Players Guild’s production of CONSTELLATIONS is a bittersweet dose of reality. It is a relationship story more than a love story. Payne examines how we react to two things in life, our partner’s behaviors and what the fates hand us. No one can predict when, or if, life will bring happiness, heartbreak, pain, or loss. Life must be lived and be experienced.  

The title is not a typo.  Hey, what are the odds?  Could it be kismet, a prearranged theatrical landing spot, or totally happenstance? And if we cosmically reset the situation, would it happen again in the same way? Would we want it to happen the same way?

Rubicon Theatre will continue its 2024/2025 Dare to Dream Season with the Central Coast premiere of CONSTELLATIONS, a romantic drama by Award-winning playwright Nick Payne.

The Peggy Ramsay Foundation will take primary responsibility for funding the Playwrights ‘73 Award, which places 4 playwrights with 4 theatres around the UK for 18 months and funds them to write a new play.

I had my first experience of watching Nick Payne’s Constellations on the National Theatre website. The production I watched was produced by DONMAR, directed by Michael Longhurst, and performed by Peter Capaldi and Zoë Wanamaker. Although the stage was empty, the use of colour and empty space enhanced by the blue and white balloons surrounding them made the play feel spectacularly otherworldly. I was instantly in love.

Written by Benedict Lombe and directed by Lynette Linton, Shifters has now opened at thr Duke of York's Theatre after playing at the Bush Theatre earlier this year.

An eloquent and very funny depiction of two young black British people, navigating their way through a waxing and waning relationship. It is a bittersweet, intelligent and exciting piece of theatre.
