In the past, I have compared the 10x10 NEW PLAY FESTIVAL to dining at a Tapas restaurant, and it is. The production offers theatre goers a variety of content in small sized servings, to explore, share, and shake off a bit of mid-winter blues in anticipation of the bountiful season ahead. You may see something appealing, something appalling, something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone – a comedy tonight. BSC is promoting this 2026 production of the 10x10 NEW PLAY FESTIVAL as “funnier than ever” and the standing ovation providing opening day audience seems to have agreed.

The submerged and, often, long-sublimated divisions and resentments and life motifs of two estranged sisters come to the fore in the visceral and joltingly immersive play entitled Problems Between Sisters. The domestic squabbles of siblings have long been given ample space in plays, films, and novels but, in this fine Studio Theatre production, the playwright Julia May Jonas delves into a feminist mirroring and elucidation of themes from playwright Sam Shepard’s well-known play True West. In this intriguing play, the battling brothers become two sisters, California becomes Vermont and screenwriting becomes visual and performance art.

This rap-infused, woke update of Mark Twain's The Prince and The Pauper, a world premiere theater piece for young audiences commissioned by the Kennedy Center, has many charms and much humor, even if it goes more than a little heavy on the agitprop for audiences under the age of 10.
