by Kaitlin Milligan
- Dec 12, 2019
LA's KERA (fka Kera & The Lesbians) have signed with the purveyors of exceptional songcraft at Mama Bird Recording Co. Earlier this year, KERA released a single with Devendra Banhart, “Bright Future Ahead”, in support of TransLifeline, which was featured at Pitchfork and SPIN. They've returned today with the video for the spaced out, doo-wop influenced “Vitamin T”. The video itself is a beautiful, ghostly black and white performance with Kera themself at the middle of it all. They stand amidst the apparitions of backup singers and floating hands to compliment the mesmerizing single. KERA's work centers on resilience--the ability to see and accept change--and details the hurdles toward growth. Their songwriting is as personal as it is universal, trying to coax some meaning out of the human condition and allowing these experiences to give them a larger perspective on the intricacies of relationships--to ourselves, to others, and to the world at large. In their own words, Kera Armendariz says;

Michaela Anne Announces New Album DESERT DOVE For 9/27 Release
by Tori Hartshorn
- Jun 12, 2019
Michaela Anne grew up bouncing around the States and abroad—from Washington to California to Italy, to name a few. A child of a military family, she learned to cope with her lack of roots and what she called “having more questions than answers” by learning to write songs. That skill set and those songs have carried Michaela Anne farther than ever imaginable, impressing the likes of NPR, who said she “works through weepers and hits the honky-tonks as every great country singer should,” and Noisey, who praised her most recent release as the antidote to commercial pop-country, calling her “our saving grace, our angel, the person who will help usher us into a new age.” And into the new age, she continues to push. On September 27th, Yep Roc Records will release Desert Dove, Michaela Anne's full-length follow up to her critically-acclaimed Bright Lights and the Fame. “By Our Design,” the album's first single and video, was premiered today at Rolling Stone. Celebrating the song as “a gorgeous meditation on picking the road not taken,” Marissa Moss, writing for Rolling Stone, notes that the track “highlights the songwriter's pristine voice.' The song, a mid-tempo burn framed with dense violins and tremolo guitar, is a sweet ode to a carved out life together; imperfect, but adaptive and free. Moss also points out Michaela Anne's intent for the song to sound like a “bit of Laurel Canyon dust into Tennessee soil.”Pre-order Desert Dove and/or stream “By Our Design” here.
TK & The Holy Know-Nothings Album Stream Out Today
by Tori Hartshorn
- May 22, 2019
American Songwriter has the full stream of TK & The Holy Know Nothings' Arguably OK ahead of its release on Mama Bird Recording Co. this Friday. The songs on Arguably OK are about dead ends, addiction, self-sabotaged relationships, drug trips gone bad (or good? or both?), and, above all, holding out for the real thing. Taylor Kingman's lyrics are tightly crafted and profoundly paradoxical; simultaneously self-deprecating and unapologetic, clever and crass, irreverent and tender; and sometimes riotously funny. Each song takes you somewhere unexpected, every phrase crafted with the same signature combination of dirtbag revelry and haltingly poignant poetry.
Frankie Lee's New Album STILLWATER Streaming Today
by Tori Hartshorn
- May 17, 2019
Frankie Lee is sharing his full record, Stillwater, today a week before the album comes out. Wide Open Country has the exclusive calling the new album an 'alluring collection of musings on hope lost and found.' The album stream follows the release of the beautifully dark rumination on aging and loss “In The Blue”, which sees Lee taking a subdued piano approach to the subject somehow softening the stark reality that time comes for us all. Lee notes that the song “dramatizes the confusion felt by the narrator as he watches the important things in life slip away. Realizing he cannot hold on to even one grain of sand, he is led to his final question whether all things are just a dream'. While American Songwriter said that '“In The Blue” finds the sweet spot between modern, soulful folk and old-school Western balladry, with Lee's gentle vocal lending an emotional heft to the track's understated, piano-forward arrangement'. Lee previously announced his hometown release show at Minneapolis' Cedar Cultural Center on June 28th after he returns from his European tour with Strand of Oaks, which starts this week.

There are some new shows opening, others which are continuing their runs and still more which will be winding up their slate of performances this weekend!

Damien Jurado's IN THE SHAPE OF A STORM Out Today On Mama Bird Recording Co.
by Tori Hartshorn
- Apr 12, 2019
Damien Jurado has released his new album, In the Shape of a Storm, on Mama Bird Recording Co. today following a sold-out release show at Portland's Revolution Hall. Jurado is about to embark on his album release tour, which includes a Northeast run with Anna St. Louis, before heading through the South, and making an appearance at Pickathon this summer. Aquarium Drunkard featured Jurado's 14th album, and first for Mama Bird Recording Co., alongside an evocative essay by Jason Woodbury on In the Shape of a Storm earlier this week. Josh Terry and Jurado spoke, ostensibly, about a handful of songs from Jurado's decades-long career for Vinyl, Me Please; the conversation twists and turns but Jurado's focus rests heavily on the effect his late friend, and producer, Richard Swift has, and continues to have, on him. The album's release follows closely on the heels of the third single, the beautifully sentimental 'Throw Me Now Your Arms'. More upbeat than the previous two singles, the song paints a picture of love, support and healthy devotion. A stunning piece, it was preceded by the first single 'South', where Jurado is able to “wrangle every ounce of emotion” out of the stark, stunning simplicity of his voice and acoustic guitar.' (Stereogum) “South” was followed by the opening track from the new album, an unearthed two decade-old song, 'Lincoln', which had been slated for Juado's third record but lost in a freak chance of a technical glitch, only to be re-discovered and re-recorded for In the Shape of a Storm.
