Damien Jurado Shares New Album 'In the Shape of a Storm'
by Kaitlin Milligan
- Apr 8, 2019
Damien Jurado is sharing his new album, In the Shape of a Storm, before it comes out on Mama Bird Recording Co. April 12th. Aquarium Drunkard is featuring the stream of Jurado's 14th album, and first for Mama Bird Recording Co., alongside an essay by Jason Woodbury. The full album follows closely on the heels of the third single, the beautifully sentimental 'Throw Me Now Your Arms'. More upbeat than the previous two singles, the song paints a picture of love, support and healthy devotion. A stunning piece, it was preceded by the first single 'South', where Jurado is able to “wrangle every ounce of emotion” out of the stark, stunning simplicity of his voice and acoustic guitar.' (Stereogum) “South” was followed by the opening track from the new album, an unearthed two decade-old song, 'Lincoln', which had been slated for Juado's third record but lost in a freak chance of a technical glitch, only to be re-discovered and re-recorded for In the Shape of a Storm. Following a sold-out album release show at Portland's Revolution Hall, Jurado is about to embark on his album release tour, which includes a Northeast run with Anna St. Louis, before heading through the Southeast, and making an appearance at Pickathon this summer.

Damien Jurado Shares New Song LINCOLN From IN THE SHAPE OF A STORM Out 4/12
by Tori Hartshorn
- Feb 25, 2019
Following the announcement of his new album, In the Shape of a Storm out on Mama Bird Recording Co. April 12th, and the first new song 'South', Damien Jurado today shares the opening track from his new album unearthing a two decade-old track, “Lincoln”, which had been slated for his third record. Jurado shares the genesis of the track saying '“Lincoln”, written in 1998, was originally slated for my third album not yet titled, Ghost of David. I had 13 songs recorded for the album onto a newly purchased digital 8-track machine. And, when the day came to mix the finished album, an error done on my part was made, erasing everything. Now under a deadline with the label to turn in a new album, I came up with the bright idea to scrap every song I had written for the album, and start a new. All original material was written, and then recorded in a period of less than a week for Ghost of David. Years later, I would come across the only recorded demo I had made for the original album on a cassette. This song was “Lincoln”. Over the years I considered “Lincoln” for many of my albums, but the song just couldn't find the proper place to land. That was until I went in to record my latest album, In the Shape of a Storm. It felt not only fitting to put it on the record, but to have it be the opening song.'
BWW Review: World Premiere BARE STAGE: A Play for the Zeitgeist
by Nancy Grossman
- Feb 12, 2019
The world premiere of Boston playwright Michael Walker's BARE STAGE lands smack in the middle of the zeitgeist, surrounded by the swirling maelstrom of #MeToo and a building movement within the theater arts community to pay attention to the needs of actors when they are at their most vulnerable. Walker wades deeply into an exploration of nudity on stage, seeking to answer the question of when it is essential to the play, and when it crosses the boundary to objectification or exploitation. The bottom line is to find the balance between the point/counterpoint of censorship vs. artistic freedom.
Damien Jurado Announces New Album 'In the Shape of a Storm'
by Kaitlin Milligan
- Feb 11, 2019
Damien Jurado is announcing his new album, In the Shape of a Storm, on Mama Bird Recording Co. April 12th today alongside a new, stunningly sparse track 'South'. Jurado's career has seen many iterations and his newest album is no less profound than any previous work, but the stark acoustic arrangements allow Jurado's every emotional vocal shift to be magnified. The stories here are deeply felt and vividly rendered. They're not leading you through but letting you come to your own conclusions, as Jurado says, ''South', like most songs that I write, is a collage of sorts, or collection of snapshots, that center around two characters. One could even presume me, or me as an alternate self. Dark, isolated, and slightly menacing in tone for a waltz number.'

Faustina Masigat's Debut Album Streaming on PopMatters Today
by Macon Prickett
- Apr 2, 2018
Faustina Masigat's debut album is one of keen reflection and personal struggles that the Portland songwriter has assembled into relatable and beautiful prose, striking a comfortable balance between abstract introspection and objective observations. Her self-titled album, coming out this Friday on Mama Bird Recording Co. (Haley Heynderickx, Courtney Marie Andrews), is streaming in full at PopMatters who say Masigat 'develops an intuitive, captivating listen throughout.' While speaking to the process of capturing her debut album, Masigat says 'there is a mundanity in heartbreak that I struggled to break out of for years. The recording process was deliberately very bare bones because I wanted that tension to be as palpable as possible. If a person really commits to their own suffering, absolutely everything becomes colored by that action. There are songs that carry that weight more than others, but the whole album was inspired by that period of time. I had had writer's block, and it felt like I was moving from situation to situation with no anchor. Every resource I had went into writing and breaking out of that monotony.'
